You “Walk the Walk” and We “Talk the Talk” For the first time, Blue Badge Guides Tom Bunting and Paul Nicolle are inviting you to Walk the Walk whilst we Talk the Talk from Saturday 18 to Friday 24 July. We are offering a series of 8 short walks around St Helier designed to amuse and inform visitors and locals alike about our vibrant Capital’s rich history and diverse buildings and sculpture. In addition, two Walks are offered outside of St Helier to those interested in exploring a little further afield. Tickets for each walk are £5 or you can purchase a special “Walk the Walk” ticket for only £20 which will entitle you to attend all the walks in that week!!! Saturday 18 July

The States Chamber Tour of Jersey’s Parliament, Royal Court & Royal Square Start & Finish: Royal Square, 10.30 – 13.00 Discover some of the landmark buildings associated with the fascinating constitutional history of the Island and explore Jersey’s unusually rich past. Tour these imposing buildings and view some of the art treasures within, including the magnificent Royal Mace presented to the Bailiff by a grateful King Charles II.

Monday 20th July

Cultural Jersey Start & Finish: Royal Square, 10.30 – 12.30 This tour will cover some of the interesting architecture in St Helier and will provide information on some of the cultural history of Jersey. Discover where Jersey’s famous actress, Lillie Langtry performed and view some of the Island’s outstanding sculpture. Money, Money, Money Start & Finish: Royal Square, 14.30 – 16.30 Jersey is a British Island, but not part of the UK or EU, nor is it controlled by the British government, but all of our laws need the approval of the Crown. This situation has led to a ban on knitting, the development of the Jersey cow, the worst riots Jersey has ever known, some drastic Bank collapses and we’ve somehow developed a vibrant financial industry. Come and find out why!

Tuesday 21st July

Living with the Enemy Start: Gunsite Café & Finish: Jersey War Tunnels, 10.30 – 12.30 From 1940, for five long years, Jersey was under the control of the Nazis. Take a stroll through St Peter’s Valley as you delve into life in Jersey when it was occupied in World War II. What was everyday life like? What did people eat? How did they know what was going on in the outside world? The walk takes you through country lanes, past occupation buildings to high woodland where one can still see the original trenches built by the occupying forces, finally ending up at the famous Jersey War Tunnels.

On the Waterfront Start & Finish: Liberation Square, 14.30 – 16.30 Enjoy a stroll around St Helier’s Waterfront and hear tales about Jersey’s long association with the sea. Along the route, we will view some of the sculpture and discover some of the fascinating history that is associated with this part of Town. Murder Muck and Mayhem Start & Finish: Royal Square, 19.30 – 21.30 An evening’s guided walk around the murkier side of St Helier, where you’ll hear about some bizarre and gruesome events and the characters associated with them and learn about some of the important historic occasions that helped shape the Island. Wednesday 22nd July

Havre Des Pas Promenade Start & Finish: Howard Davis Park (by King George V’s Statue at the Park’s main entrance), 10.30 – 12.30 This tour will start at the beautiful Howard Davis Park, take in St Luke’s Church and then wander through the attractive lanes of Havre Des Pas, which has a rich history and a long association with the sea. We will walk along the pleasant seafront and visit the site of one of the last shipbuilders in the Island. Finally, the tour will pass through Green Street cemetery where intriguing tales associated with those buried there will be told.

Thursday 23rd July

The Mistress, the Major and the Mad Mathematician. Start & Finish: Liberation Square, 10.30 – 12.30 Jersey has had its share of interesting personalities from the internationally famous to the locally eccentric. On this walk around St Helier, you will hear about many of them, visit the places they knew and hear tales of their lives. Grand Gorey Start & Finish: Bus Stop at Gorey Harbour, 14.15 – 17.15 Explore Gorey Harbour and discover other interesting sites, including defensive towers and a Neolithic tomb, which are close by the famous Mont Orgueil Castle that dominates this part of the Island. Also discover the delights of Gorey Village with its unique history and culture. All of this is set against the backdrop of the beautiful Royal Bay of Grouville.

Friday 24th July

St Helier Harbours Start & Finish: Liberation Square, 14.30 – 16.30 Up until the 16th Century the sea lapped at St Helier’s Church, now the church is in the centre of town. The resourceful people of Jersey have moved the sea back and created at least five harbours on the way. Come and explore the town harbours, hear tales of Pirates, Smugglers and Royalty and learn something of life at sea over the last five centuries.
