Graffiti Weekend revs up Simple classic car idea is now 28 years old and continues to attract thousands to central Douglas County CRAIG REED The News-Review

T

here’s something about hundreds of classic cars — every color of the crayon box — cruising Douglas County’s streets for five solid days straight. It’s a sight to see and it keeps motorists and participants coming back for more each year. Nearly 1,000 drivers pull into Douglas County each summer to show off their classic collectibles and hot rods during Graffiti Weekend. What started out as a simple idea between a couple of local car clubs has blossomed into an occasion that draws about 20,000 spectators and participants over its five-day span. This year, the event continues to grow. The Rock ’n’ Rollin’ Pancake Breakfast and the Graffiti Drags are no longer unofficial events of Graffiti Weekend. Those two events were popular enough in their debuts last year that they are now officially on the week’s lineup. This year’s 28th annual Graffiti Weekend is scheduled for today through Sunday in Roseburg. Last year’s drag event drew about 50 cars on Sunday. This year the drags will be held Saturday evening at the Douglas County Speedway. “We didn’t expect that many, but all of a sudden it took hold,” said Don Larsen, a member of the Stray Angels Car Club and a co-coordinator of the Graffiti week. “It’ll be another place for cars and people to go Turn to GRAFFITI, page 3

They’ll have a place to cruise and a place to race.” The Umpqua Flatheads Roseburg Graffiti Night Cruise for vehicles 1965 and older is scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. The speedway gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and the track will open to drag racing at 7 p.m. Larsen said there has been some concern by organizers about participants and attendance for Graffiti Weekend because of economic struggles for some people and businesses, but he said he’s optimistic about the event continuing to be a success. “We’re concerned, but we’re still getting a lot of phone calls, so we’re still expecting a full house,” Larsen said. “These events treat people well, it doesn’t cost them an arm and a leg. People can participate with a donation here and there. We’re happy it keeps going strong.” Last year’s registration totaled 439 cars that were pre-1975 models. About 70 percent of the registered cars come from out of the area. Graffiti Weekend was started as an idea back in 1982. It evolved into reliving the ’50s by cruising some classic cars down

Cruise in remembering a simpler time. Since those early days, the cruise has grown into one of Douglas County’s most

noteworthy events, providing five days chock-full of hot rods, barbecues and other family entertainment all known collectively as Graffiti Weekend. One of those events is the 26th Annual River Forks Show-n-Shine, another highlight of the week, presented by the Stray Angels Car Club. Some 500 cars, all at least more than three decades old, will rumble into River Forks Park west of Roseburg for a day of display in the sun. New events include a new poker run at Ray’s Food Place in Green and a Graffiti kickoff show at the Roseburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Organizers for the Graffiti Night Cruise are also trying something new this year, opening the cruise to vehicles 1965 and older, instead of the traditional 1960 and older. Osborn said the event is made possible by several sponsors and donations from local businesses. Cascade Community Credit Union is this year’s major sponsor. “It’s a real joint venture between the community,” he said. “And it’s a big shot in the arm for the town.” “We feel pretty proud of it,” Larsen said. “We want it to be an affordable family event.”

A hot rod of his own vintage Bill Haynes has been working hard to rebuild and modify his 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe in time for Graffiti Weekend

Roseburg’s Bill Haynes relaxes with twin grandsons Tyler and Will on the running board of Haynes’ 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe. The Ford was produced the same year as its current owner. Haynes will drive the coupe in this week’s Graffiti events, with his grandsons in the custom built back seat.

year. Now the 69-year-old is working hard to ready his 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe for the upcoming Graffiti Weekend activities in Roseburg. “It’s a labor of love,” he said of working on the car. “The gratification is in the doing. It’s fun.” Haynes is making the car a hot rod, and that gives him leeway in bringing the car back to life. Rather than being restored to its original state, the car will have plenty of modifications to make it more modern and comfortable. Haynes has had an interest in 1940 coupes since buying his first one back in 1956. He sold that one four years later while in the U.S. Army, but has had five more since. The one he has now he found in a barn in Flourney Valley west of Lookingglass. He purchased it three years ago and hauled the car and its parts away in a pile on a trailer. “It was in rough shape,” he said of the car. “Everything was crooked and warped. It was in terrible condition.” He couldn’t wait to get to work on it, but his full-time profession as a building designer-contractor limited his time for his after-hours hobby.

to drive in last year’s Graffiti events. When Haynes ended his 40-year contracting career last year, he finally had the time for which he’d been dreaming to work on his coupe. He began working eight hours or more a day on it in his shop near his Roseburg area home. He’s a one-man crew, but occasionally gets visits from his young grandsons, Tyler and Will Haynes of Roseburg. “They’re our junior hot-rodders,” Bill Haynes said. “When the boys get a little bigger, I’m going to teach them how to do all kinds of things.” “I was wondering what I was going to do with him around the house all the time,” Rees Haynes said of her husband’s hobby. “Instead, he’s down there (in the shop) all the time. “ That’s his domain. I’m really pleased he has this interest. He gets so much gratification out of it.” Both Bill and Rees have automobile backgrounds. Both of their fathers were employees of Roseburg car dealerships while Bill and Rees were growing up. Bill Haynes’ sole mission since his retirement has been getting his coupe

ready for Graffiti Night. He spent six months getting the old floor out and getting a new one in. Somebody previously had tried to fix the old floor by welding it with a brazing rod, and that made it tougher to remove. “I cut it, grinded it, chiseled it, torched it … trying to cut it from the sidewalls, pillars and the body panels,” Haynes said. “That was the nastiest part. After I got that done, then I had a pretty good car to work with.” The end result will be a green coupe with a Chevy small block engine with a fully synchronized three speed. Because of the modifications allowed in making it a hot rod, there’ll be drum brakes on the

rear tires and disc brakes in the front, independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering, air conditioner, heater and direction signals. But none of these modifications will be noticeable on the dashboard, leaving it with an original look. The ignition is hidden and direction signals are hidden under the dash. The air conditioning unit is in the trunk, and the AC switch is in the glove box. The old starter switch is now the horn button. Winston Summer Nite Cruise a family affair The News-Review WINSTON — Graffiti Weekend activities are not limited to Roseburg. Every year, a couple of thousand people take to the streets and sidewalks of Winston for a Saturday night cruise and dancing in the streets afterward. This year, the Winston Summer Nite Cruise is set to begin at 5 p.m. and to continue with music, food and mingling until 10 p.m. at Civic Wayside Park, behind City Hall on Douglas Boulevard. The cruise route starts at the south end of Main Street and continues right on Douglas Boulevard to Abraham Avenue, where motorists will turn right again onto Lookingglass Road and head east back to Main Street. Vehicles are not limited to certain years; owners of all special interest cars are welcome to cruise.

It’s fun to drive. “I wanted to be able to get out on the freeway and drive 70 miles an hour, and be comfortable doing it and get decent gas mileage,” he added. “The car will do that.”

Haynes, who is a member of the Umpqua Flatheads Car Club, is very complimentary of the Graffiti event. He said he has visited other classic car events, but Roseburg’s is by far the best. “It’s a cooperative effort by a number of clubs and organizations … they work well together and do a helluva job of putting on a terrific event,” he said. He can’t wait to participate in his 1940 coupe. • You can reach Features editor Craig Reed at 957-4210 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Sports car a fast deal at garage sale Karen Matney makes quick decision to purchase 1967 Austin-Healey Sprite during stop in Lookingglass

Karen Matney of Lookingglass is delighted with her 1967 Austin-Healey Sprite. She bought the car a year ago at a garage sale for $3,000 and has put that much more into it to fix it up. She’s a member of the Stray Angels car club and several members of that club have helped her by working on the car.

lightly more than a year ago, Karen Matney stopped at a garage sale in Lookingglass and spotted an unusual collectible. Unlike the worn clothing, antique furniture or baseball cards one might expect at such a sale, this item was different. It was a champagne beauty with 1960s flair, and it was winking at Matney from the lawn. The ’67 Austin-Healey Sprite was for sale by its original owners, who marked the price tag at $3,000. The British sports car made road waves when it hit the market in the late ’50s. Matney immediately recognized the value of the compact twodoor roadster. Although there were three potential buyers already standing around the car, Matney asked the owner for the key to the

ignition. After taking the Austin for a test drive, she whipped out her checkbook. Dismayed at her instant decision, the people who had been standing around the car started to complain. “They said, ‘Hey, we’re looking at that,’” Matney said with a cackle. “I told them, ‘You can look all you want; I just bought it.’” Once she welcomed her prize to its new home, Matney threw at least another $3,000 into the car. It needed new upholstery, chrome bumpers, brakes, mirrors and most important, a new paint job. Matney settled on the closest shade she could find to the original Austin-Healey blue. She is planning to install a new top on the convertible before

Graffiti Weekend. Matney admitted she knows very little about Austins in general. When asked what kind of engine it has, she replied, “one that runs.” However, with a little help from her car club, the Stray Angels, the little speedster was in tip-top shape in no time. The Stray Angels donated the hubcaps, another couple in the club applied fresh paint, one person installed new upholstery and others, Matney said, used their “knowhow” to make necessary repairs to the car. If they couldn’t make the repairs, club members pointed Matney to someone who could.

From Ford to Chevy Jim Boaz of Roseburg has turned his restoring focus to a blue 1947 Chevrolet

Jim Boaz of Roseburg stands next to the 1947 Chevrolet coupe that he is restoring in the garage of his Newton Creek home. He’s spent the past two years restoring the car he bought in Cottage Grove. The finished vehicle will be the same Chianti red color as shown in the firewall behind him.

JOHN SOWELL The News-Review hen it comes to restoring old classic cars, Jim Boaz has always been a Ford man. It’s not that the Newton Creek resident has anything against Chevys. For years, his wife drove a 1972 Monte Carlo and he piloted a 1970 El Camino. However, beginning with a 1930 Ford Model A, Boaz’s restoration work has focused on Fords. He’s refurbished a 1947 Ford coupe and a convertible model from the same year. “I’ve been restoring cars for a long time,” said Boaz, who bought his first car, a 1946 Mercury, when he was 15. Three years ago, however, a blue 1947 Chevy sitting at a car lot in Cottage Grove caught his eye. Boaz was on his way home after failing to negotiate a deal for a car he liked in Portland and stopped at Hamilton’s Classic Auto Sales to see what the place had. He spotted the blue 1947 Chevrolet and quickly decided it could easily take the place of the automobile he had wanted to buy in Portland. He purchased the two-door car on the spot. “I liked the way it looked,” said Boaz, retired after spending 39 years making plywood for Roseburg Forest Products. It took a year before Boaz started working to restore the car. He installed a new floorboard and added new running boards. He also replaced the stock six-cylinder engine with a rebuilt 1985 eight-cylinder, 350 cubic inch displacement, model and

changed out the four-speed shifter on the floor for another one. “It’s been changed completely,” said Boaz, who has resided in Douglas County since 1951 and who is a former chairman of the Umpqua Flatheads car club. In addition, he also had to replace many of the car’s front-end steering linkage. “The front end was shot. You could hardly keep it on the road at 40 miles an hour,” Boaz said, laughing at the memory of driving it home from the Cottage Grove dealership on Interstate 5. He updated the coupe’s drum brakes with disc brakes and also installed electric Turn to BOAZ, page 12

As the car accelerated, the wipers would gain speed, while slowing down with the engine. He replaced the stock two-barrel carburetor with an Eldelbrock high performance four-barrel carburetor. That model is calibrated for top street performance while providing good fuel economy. He also has his eyes on replacing the striped cloth upholstery with a burgundy and cream combination. Boaz also stripped off the car’s paint, both its recent blue hue and an underlying green that he said was the vehicle’s original shade. He chose a red Chianti for the car’s new color. Because of medical issues, Boaz has only been able to get the firewall and the hood painted so far. He’d hoped to have the car ready to drive in this year’s Graffiti Weekend, but said it will be next summer before the restored car is ready for its maiden cruise. The car body has been sanded and coated with primer. He plans to spray the car with two coats of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. paint, followed by two or three layers of clear coat to bring out the paint’s gloss. Many of his other restored cars were painted black. This time he’s gone to red, one that contains subtle gold highlights. “This is the first red car I’ve had,” Boaz said. “I kind of liked the color.”

Matney is an expert behind the wheel. After moving to Douglas County from New Jersey in 1980, she drove a semitruck for 13 years. After that, she was the fire chief for the Lookingglass Volunteer Fire Department. She has always loved old cars, she said, but confided that she was actually searching for a 1964-1/2 Mustang Convertible before she bought the Austin-Healey Sprite. A girl can never have too many classic cars, though, and Matney hinted that she might make another spontaneous purchase should the opportunity arise.

Graffiti T-shirts Designer to retire after 14 years; this year’s shirt will feature Hansen Motor Co. after The Blast of 1959 MARISSA HARSHMAN The News-Review Designs for the Umpqua Flatheads Graffiti Night T-shirts usually begin with a simple photo or a distant — but not forgotten — memory. From there, T-shirt designer Mitch Osborn lets his imagination run wild. “I have a crazy little mind,” the 58-yearold said with a smile. Osborn has been designing the shirts for the annual Graffiti Night Cruise for the past 14 years and has volunteered in various positions at the Umpqua Flatheads Car Club event for even longer. But this year’s shirt featuring Hansen Motor Co. after The Blast in 1959 will be Osborn’s final cruise T-shirt design. After more than a decade at the design helm, Osborn is relinquishing his role to allow for someone with new, fresh ideas to take over. “I’m ready to step back, and yeah, I’ll miss it, but if somebody needs guidance, I’ll help,” Osborn said. After flipping through a notebook with photos of 14 years worth of designs protected in plastic cover sheets, Osborn decided that he couldn’t choose a favorite. “They’re all a little bit special in their own way,” he said. Osborn began designing the shirts in 1995; for the previous five years, various

So you know ... Umpqua Flatheads Graffiti Night T-shirts go on sale today and will be available throughout Graffiti Weekend. The white T-shirts cost $15. Proceeds support the Umpqua Flatheads Car Club’s weekend events. The 2009 shirts feature Hansen Motor Co. the day after the Roseburg Blast in 1959. Shirts can be purchased at the following locations: • Today — During the Kick Off to Graffiti Show at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 913 N.W. people took responsibility for producing the shirts. The first T-shirt Osborn designed featured the Brockway Store with a 1957 Ford Thunderbird and a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette. In the years that followed, Osborn featured Pete’s Drive-In, the Starlite Theater and the Snack Shack — all old hangouts around town. In addition to replicating iconic locations in Douglas County, Osborn has used the shirts to pay tribute to Umpqua Flatheads members who have died and to showcase cars that won local shows. “Sometimes I put it off and wonder if it

Sometimes it takes a while.” Osborn said he came up with the idea for this year’s shirt after seeing an old framed picture of Hansen Motor Co. hanging in Cascade Community Credit Union. The photo revealed the damage the downtown business endured from The Blast. To honor the 50th anniversary of the catastrophic event, Osborn decided to use the image in the photo on the front of the 2009 shirt. The back of the shirt includes historical information about the business and a chronological listing of the events leading up to The Blast. “This one’s probably going to be one of the most colorful and multifaceted,” Osborn said of this year’s shirt. Every year anywhere from 600 to 1,000 Umpqua Flathead Graffiti Night shirts are sold and all of the proceeds support the annual event. Classic Car Tales CAR OWNER: Bob Fischer of Winston OCCUPATION: Retired MY RIDE: 1949 Ford F1 pickup

Photos courtesy of Bob Fischer

Winston’s Bob Fischer found this 1949 Ford F1 pickup in Glendale. He says it was a mess, but also the answer to a prayer.

HOW I GOT THE CAR: Each month for over a year, I bought the “Old Car Trader” books to see what I wanted and what the cost would be. I decided on the 1948-49 or ’50 Ford F1 pickup design. I looked for over a year, then saw an ad for a 1949 Ford F1 pickup in Glendale. It was a mess, but I knew it was an answer to prayer as it had my name on the custom license plate: BOBS49. WORK I’VE DONE ON THE CAR: All restoration work was done by Dan Fouts. Custom interior was by Diamond Auto Upholstery. Glass work and fabricated springs for exterior doors was by Tom Muse, who also mixes custom paints. WHAT THE VEHICLE MEANS TO ME: A wonderful answer to a prayer that I really enjoy owning and driving. FAVORITE PLACE TO DRIVE: Winston to Roseburg FAVORITE CAR MEMORY: When I found this old truck in Glendale, it already had my name on the license plate. We towed it back in a very cold, heavy snowstorm.

Bob Fischer is pleased with his restored 1949 Ford F1 pickup.

This 1931 Ford coupe sat for decades in a shed waiting for someone — who turned out to be Roseburg’s Blaine Perry — to restore it. Perry found the car in the 1970s and, with help, has been working on it ever since.

CAR OWNER: Blaine Perry, Roseburg OCCUPATION: Retired postal worker

Blaine Perry’s 1931 Ford five-window coupe, bottom photo, now shines with a bright yellow color. The car used to be owned by Perry’s brother, Martin, and has been in the Perry family for many years.

MY RIDE: 1931 Ford five-window coupe HOW I GOT THE CAR: Was previously owned by my brother, Martin, in the 1960s. I found it in a shed in the ’70s and have had it ever since. WORK I’VE DONE ON THE CAR: Frame off restoration by myself and my son, Tim Perry. TCI chassis rolling powder coated by Don Robertson, 700R4 transmission built by Mock Trans in Cottage Grove, 350 engine, rack & pinion steering, 9-inch rear. Interior done by Dayton Kolb, paid for by my son, Ryan. Top chopped 4 inches back in the late 1950s or earlier by Chuck Mathis. The early body patch panels were done by Ed Fry of Myrtle Creek. All fabrication and body and paint done by Tim and myself.

Photos courtesy of Blaine Perry

WHAT THE VEHICLE MEANS TO ME: Owned by my brother; my son, Tim, and I decided 30-plus years was long enough and so rebuilt the engine three and a half years ago. The old windshield frame has a Roseburg High parking permit on it. It has been in the Perry family since then. FAVORITE PLACE TO DRIVE: Anywhere FAVORITE CAR MEMORY: My brother pulling a wheelie leaving his driveway on Roberts Creek Road. I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in helping me build my dream car, especially my son, Tim, who spent hours working on his dad’s car.
