About the Speakers Kevin Noone Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences Kevin Noone has degrees in Chemical Engineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA (USA). He was on the faculty at Stockholm University from 1987-91, a research scientist and Adjunct Professor of Oceanography at the Center for Atmospheric Chemistry Studies, Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island (USA) from 1992-1995, and was Professor of Meteorology and head of the Atmospheric Physics Division at the Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University from 2000-2004. From 2004-2008 he was the Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP), and a member of the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP). In autumn 2008 he moved back to Stockholm University, with joint appointments at the Department of Applied Environmental Science and the Stockholm Resilience Centre. Early research work in Chemical Engineering focused on transparent semiconductors for use as solar cells in the generation of electricity. His primary research interests at present are in the area of atmospheric chemistry & physics, the effects of aerosols and clouds on air quality and the Earth's climate, and Applied Earth System Science. He is an advocate of an interdisciplinary approach to obtaining a solid scientific basis for decisions on environmental and climate issues. He is author/coauthor of more than 120 scientific articles and book chapters. Kevin has headed up of a number of large international field experiments, and is (or has been) a member of a number of international committees and boards, currently including the European Academies Science Advisory Council’s Environment Steering Panel. He is Associate Editor of the journals Ambio and Atmospheric Research, and was Editor in Chief of the IGBP Global Change Newsletter. Kevin is active in conveying science to stakeholders and the general public. He regularly gives presentations and short courses on climate and Earth System Science for non-science audiences. He also interacts regularly with the media in international arenas. Anders Wijkman MEP President of GLOBE EU University degree in political science at University of Stockholm (1967). Member of the Swedish Parliament (1970-1978). Secretary General of the Swedish Red Cross (1979-1988). Secretary General of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (1989-91). Director General of the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries (SAREC) (1992-94). Assistant Administrator of UNDP (1995-97). Ambassador at the Swedish Foreign Ministry (1998). Member of the European Parliament since 1999.
Other ongoing commitments: -Vice President - Club of Rome -Chairman - Plan Sverige -Board member - Tällberg Foundation -Expert Group Chairman for the Commission on Climate Change and Development Anders Wijkman has been a member of several government task forces on issues related to environment, sustainable development, energy, foreign aid etc. During 1992-94 he was chairing a special government commission analysing the possible effects for Sweden's physical environment of joining the European Union. In 1993-94 he was chairing a government task force reviewing Swedish foreign aid after UNCED. From 1993-96 he served as one of the members of the Independent Commission on Population and Quality of Life. In April 2001 Mr Wijkman participated in the high-level expert panel on “ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) for development”, appointed by the UN Secretary General. Mr Wijkman is the author of several books on issues related to disaster prevention, sustainable development, Hiv/Aids etc. His latest book "The Needless Tragedies: Man and Disasters" was published in 2005. Delia Villagrasa Senior Advisor to the European Climate Foundation Delia is Swiss-Spanish, and has a degree in business administration from the University of St. Gallen. She has worked in the corporate sector, for development and environmental organisations. At present she is Senior Advisor to the European Climate Foundation (ECF) particularly on the issue of the upcoming Copenhagen global climate agreement and the EU’s role within this process. After some corporate work, her environmental career started at WWF International, where she worked for 4 years and got the «environmental bug», never to fully leave environmental issues thereafter. Delia came to Brussels 13 years ago to become Director of Climate Action Network Europe, which she steered for 4 years during the exciting time of the UN negotiations for the Kyoto Protocol, and the resulting development of EU policies until 1999. Afterwards she headed the Business Council for Sustainable Energy for several years and then made herself independent, advising different organisations on EU environmental, particularly climate and energy, matters, working intensively with the EU Institutions. Martin Rocholl European Climate Foundation Policy Director & Programme Director for Transport Martin Rocholl has over 30 years experience as a volunteer and professional in environmental NGOs, working on a broad spectrum of issues, such as sustainable city planning, EU structural and agricultural policies, transport and
climate change. He previously worked as a consultant on environmental and European politics and campaign strategies in Berlin, with a specialisation in energy efficiency legislation in the EU. Rocholl has founded and served on the board of several local, national and international NGOs. From 1998 to 2005 Rocholl worked in Brussels as the director of Friends of the Earth Europe, a network of environmental organisations in 30 European countries with more than 2000 local groups. He was the coordinator of the successful Ecological Tax Reform Campaign in Germany in 1996-1997 (with 'Deutscher Naturschutzring'). Rocholl has also worked as a journalist and scientist and holds a PhD in Biology. Mariangiola Fabbri Senior Energy Policy Officer at World Wildlife Fund, Europe Mariangiola is Senior Energy Policy Officer at WWF EPO in Brussels. She leads the WWF network in developing positions and policies for energy efficiency and energy conservation and actively involves in the decision-making and implementation of European legislation. Trained as a political scientist in Italy, France and Canada, she holds an MSc in European Environmental Law and Advanced European Political Studies. She joined WWF in 2004. Nicholas Dunlop Co-founder and Secretary-General of the e-Parliament Nicholas Dunlop served for ten years as the first Secretary-General of Parliamentarians for Global Action, an international network of legislators concerned with global problems. He designed and launched the Six Nation Peace Initiative, which brought together the Presidents and Prime Ministers of Argentina, Greece, India, Mexico, Sweden and Tanzania in a group to work on nuclear disarmament. He was a co-recipient of the first Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Development and International Cooperation, an annual award presented by the President of India. More recently, Nicholas Dunlop was Executive Director of the EarthAction Network, which consists of over 2,000 citizen groups in more than 160 countries working together to generate political will to solve global problems. Working with celebrities such as the actor Leonardo DiCaprio and the rock band Crosby, Stills and Nash, Dunlop has helped to increase public attention to major problems such as climate change and desertification. He has also served as a Consultant to the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme on relations with national parliaments. Michael Benien RWE AG Corporate Development Department Michael was a consultant for Roland Berger Strategy between 2006 and 2007. He joined the Corporate Development Department of RWE AG, which is partly
responsible for the RWE electro-mobility pilot projects such as the "e-mobility Berlin" in partnership with Daimler.
