Spanish for Doctors 101: CLASS ONE

Orientation, Syllabus Overview, Introductions Power verbs: “Estar, Sentir” (to be, to feel) Students will be able to discuss syllabus and class components with instructor. Students will be able to meet the teacher and the classmates. Students will be able to greet their teacher/classmate with the appropriate greeting (good morning/afternoon/night) Students will be able to introduce themselves to the teacher and classmates using the Spanish verbs SER and LLAMAR Students will practice using “estar” to ask and answer questions based on state of being Students will be able to differentiate between the verbs “ser” and “estar” Students will be introduced to “sentir”

Parts of the body, “tener” (to have) Common Phrases (TPR)
Students will be able to label parts of a body in Spanish (team quiz #1) Students will practice using the verb “tener” Using TPR (total physical response) movements, Students will practice reciting and pantomiming common hospital phrases like, “¿Estás enfermo?” (are you sick) and “soy enfermera” ( I am a nurse).

Vital Vocabulary: Bodily organs, “doler” (to hurt) •
Students will practice using the verbs tener and doler in combination with the recently learned body parts. Students will familiarize themselves with the body’s organs.

Students will review power verbs/recommendations Students will be able to demonstrate comprehensive understanding of course during a FINAL CUMULATIVE EXAM.: Students will practice with a native non-English speaker with an emergency ailment. Student must calm the patient down using learned phrases and commands. Student must fill out the medical history form, and must assess the problem the pseudo-patient is suffering from, and must explain to them the procedure which is likely to follow. Students will fill out an evaluation form with regards to the instructor’s/ course effectiveness Students will participate in a graduation in which they receive their certificate
