SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT ON SELECTED BEACHES IN KUCHING, LUNDU AND SEMATAN, SARAWAK *Ruhana Hassan1, Mohamad Kasyfullah Zaini2, Zaihatun Mahani Zakaria3 and Samsur Mohamad1 University Malaysia Sarawak [email protected] Abstract

Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, has around 800 kilometres of coastlines facing the South China Sea. White, sandy beaches are the attraction to tourists besides its lush green jungles, spectacular limestone caves and multi-ethnic cultural heritage. Ecotourism is currently one of the most important industries in Sarawak. Nevertheless, tourism which involves the beaches is now facing a new challenge namely deteriorating coastal zone quality especially problems related to solid waste dumping. This study is designed to assess management strategies of solid waste on selected beaches in Kuching, Lundu and Sematan.

Beaches with different

management experiences were selected as study sites whereas methods to acquire data involved visual observations and interviews with the beach managers and other stakeholders.

Results obtained showed that besides the beach management

applied, the level of awareness among visitors and local people about solid waste disposal, have great influence on the cleanliness of beaches. At the end of this paper, a few suggestions will be outlined to explore the possibility of upgrading beach management and consequently increase the level of cleanliness of the beaches involved. 1
