Software Requirements SERVER SOFTWARE Network Operating Systems  The purpose is to support a network.  Typically resides on a server.

 The client computers on the network rely on the server for recourses  Example : i) NetWare ii) Windows Server 2003 iii) OS/2 Warp Server for e-business, iv) UNIX v) LINUX vi) Solaris.

Server Software NETWARE  Network operating system designed for client/server networks.  NetWare has a server portion that resides on the network server and client portion that resides on each client computer connected to the network.  The server potion of NetWare allows users to share hardware devices attached to the server such as a printer, as well as any files or application software stored on the server.  The client computers also can have their own stand-alone operation system such as Windows XP Professional or Mac OS X.

Server Software WINDOWS SERVER 2003 Windows Server2003 is an upgrade to Windows 2000 Server, which was an upgrade to Windows NT Server. Windows Server2003 which includes features of previous server versions, offers the following Capabilities:  Web site management and hosting.  Delivery and management of multimedia across intranets and the Internet.  Document storage in Web folders  Client support using Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows, Mac OS X and UNIX.

Server Software OS/2 WARP SERVER FOR E-BUSINESS  IBM’s network operating system  Designed for all sizes of business.  Many e-commerce applications use OS/2 Warp Server for e-business.  The web browser and e-mail program similar to Netscape.  Client use OS/2 Warp Client or some version of Windows.

Server Software UNIX

 Being a stand-alone operating system and also can being a network operating system.  Handling a high volume of transactions in a multi user environment and working with multiple processors using multiprocessing.  For this reason, some computer professionals call UNIX a multipurpose operating system because it is both a stand-alone and network operating system.

Server Software LINUX  LINUX is also a multi-operating system.  Can be network administrator also can configure the network, administer security, run a Web Server and process e-mail.  Clients on the network can run LINUX.  Version of LINUX include both the Netscape and Mozilla Web browser.

Server Software SOLARIS  Solaris a version of UNIX developed by Sun Microsystems,  It is a network operating system designed specifically for e-commerce application.  Solaris manages high-traffic accounts and incorporates security necessary for Web transactions.  Client computers use a GNOME- based version Solaris.
