FALL 2008

THE SAN DIEGO ARMED SERVICES YMCA Serving 6,000 military and their families each month with free social networking and family bonding programs with the help of volunteers and donors like you.

Paul Hartley 1925-2008 The Armed Services YMCA and the world lost a true gentlemen on August 23, 2008 when Captain Paul Hartley, USN, (Ret.) passed away after a gallant battle against cancer. Captain Hartley, or “Uncle Paul,” as he was known to so many, was truly a man of honor and courage, and, a man who gave so much to his family, his friends and his community. With a twinkle in his eyes and a grin on his face, he was ready in an instant to liven any gathering, including business meetings, with his bugle and ukulele. Captain Hartley, after a very successful 31 year Navy career, continued his love for military families by serving on the San Diego Armed Services YMCA Board of Management and the Board of Directors of the Armed Services YMCA of the USA. Captain Hartley never took “no” as an answer when pursuing assistance for military families. His contributions cannot be measured as they were enormous and, while we miss his humor and his warmth, we will never loose our wonderful memories of Captain Paul Hartley. Executive Director Captain Paul Steffens, USN, (Ret.)

The Armed Services YMCA, the USO, Navy League, and the Fleet and Family Support Center joined together to honor the 2008 Ombudsman and Key Volunteers at the Annual Ombudsman and Key Volunteer Luncheon.
