Vice Chancellors, Chancellor’s Cabinet and Deans

SUBJECT:

Vice Chancellor for Public Service and Engagement Position

I wanted you to know that Mike Smith’s role as vice chancellor for public service and engagement is ending. Effective June 30, Mike will devote his full attention to being dean of the School of Government. We will eliminate the position of vice chancellor for public service and engagement. This change in no way reflects upon the extraordinary effort that Mike has made since assuming these additional duties as vice chancellor more than two-and-a-half years ago. He has helped the University make great strides in thinking strategically about the impact our people and programs have across North Carolina. He effectively led our campus response to the daunting assignment from President Bowles for his UNC Tomorrow initiative. He has followed up that work with new efforts to keep faculty and others engaged with each other about how their scholarship can help our state. He has been a tremendous advocate for public service and engaged scholarship both on and off campus. I know that the University will continue to benefit from all of the initiatives that Mike has led. This is a difficult decision that I have made in the context of the current budget situation. I have made a commitment to the campus that my office and senior administration will do its part to respond to our fiscal challenges. Doing that requires taking a hard look at how we have been doing things, including reducing administrative layers. In addition to eliminating this vice chancellor position, we also will eliminate an assistant vice chancellor position for which Mike was recruiting. We remain committed to serving the state of North Carolina. The Carolina Center for Public Service will continue its outstanding work in recognizing and nurturing outstanding public service by our students and faculty. In addition, the Campus Community Partnership, conceived by Mike Smith and our campus in response to UNC Tomorrow, will continue in the School of Government under Mike's leadership. Please join me in thanking Mike for his contributions to Carolina as vice chancellor. I look forward to his continued excellent leadership for the School of Government, which is among the best-known anchors of public service at our University.
