Smelling the colors of Prague By Irina Mateciuc I made up my mind to tell you about Prague, cause this summer I got back in Czech Republic for the second time and I have such good & fresh memories in my mind. Her smell is here in my apartment stolen and brought in a cup, her image is spread around Romania through souvenirs I’ve collected and bought for friends and her colors are deep inside my mind. What can be wonderful that close your eyes and imagine you’re there? Prague through my eyes seemed to be fantastically colored. Even if some of my trip mates saw it grey as a small village with traditional cottages from West of England. I’ve admired her from the very beginning. I’ll tell “her” because I’m imagining that Prague is like a mid-age glam lady, one of the most desired women from Europe for her beauty but in the same time enough wealthiest to make the sheiks envious. And of

course...single but not available?!  The first place after London I would like to live would be definitely this city on the Vltava River. I think all this “unknown” equal mystery until you meet her and you’re

more deep in the “unknown” makes her to be one of the most visited cities from Europe precisely on the sixth position after London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Berlin.

Situated in central Bohemia and called “Hlavní město Praha” which in Czech means

“The Capital City” Prague has flavors of history in each single corner.

She suffered considerably less damage during World War II than some other major cities in the region, allowing most of its historic architecture to stay true to form. It contains one of the world's most pristine and varied collections of architecture, from Art Nouveau to Baroque, Renaissance, Cubist, Gothic, Neo-

Classical and ultra-modern. One of popular sights is Prague Castle which is the largest ancient castle in the world according to Guinness World Records. When you come and visit her you should start with Mala Strana or Lesser Quarter. Its name comes from its position on the left (west) bank of the river Vltava, on the slopes just below the Prague Castle, in opposition to the larger towns of Prague on the right bank, to which it is conjoined by the Charles Bridge, which by the way is one of the most romantic place to take a promenade with your soul mate. If you’re a writer, poet, artist or only a dreamer you should move in no time in this musical city or better I could only take my luggage and leave in this moment without giving so many advices.  I will do this someday! Meanwhile we’re on the picturesque Charles Bridge, 516 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries (I’ve really count them!), most of them baroquestyle, erected around 1700. Nowadays you can find here all sort of crafts, handmade accessories and souvenirs, you can have your portrait draw by local artists or even to be a model for a caricature. Better and funnier. After we’ve crossed the bridge the Old Town (Staré Město) with its Old Town Square is waiting us. Notable places in the Old Town include the Old New Synagogue and the Old Town Square or Astronomical Clock. I’ll tell you that the astonishing Astronomical Clock has three components: the astronomical dial representing the position of Sun and Moon in the sky, then “The walk of the Apostles”, a clockwork hourly show the figures of

the Apostles and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months. Every hour it gathers hundreds of tourists that look amazed at the change of the hour and the blessing of the Apostles. Some other major sights would be: The vaulted gothic Old New Synagogue of 1270, New Town (Nové město) with its busy and historic Wenceslas Square, Josefov (the old Jewish quarter) with Old Jewish Cemetery and Old New Synagogue, Jan Žižka equestrian statue in Vítkov park, Žižkov - Prague 3. , The Lennon Wall , Vinohrady , The museum of Heydrich assassination in the crypt of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, National Museum or Vyšehrad castle. One of the weirdness of Prague is one of her buildings that are on the list of TOP 50 Strange Buildings in the world. This is called The Dancing House (Fred and Ginger Building) was designed by Croatian-born Czech architect Vlado Milunić in co-operation with Canadian architect Frank Gehry on a vacant riverfront plot (where the previous building had been destroyed during the Bombing of Prague in 1945). The building was designed in 1992 and completed in 1996. Originally named Fred and Ginger (after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers - the house vaguely resembles a pair of dancers) the house stands out among the Neo-Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings for which Prague is famous. Others have nicknamed it "Drunk House".

On the roof is a French restaurant with magnificent views of the city. The building's other tenants include several multinational firms. Prague clubs spin their tunes from dusk 'til dawn, so whether you're into serious clubbing or just a late drink and a quick dance, Prague is a good night out for one and all. Take it easy on the Absinthe though! As a must in nightlife of Prague is Karlovy Lazne, one of the coolest places to hang out if you're into serious clubbing. Just one entrance fee gets you a ticket to "5 clubs on 5 levels". Each floor has its own style, from chill out to hard core trance. It’s enough variation to keep even the most ardent clubber entertained all night.

The interior of the Karlovy Lazne building dates from the 14th/15th centuries. Original mosaic tiles adorn the walls and floors in some areas, while preserved Roman style spa pools (minus the water!) serve as two of the dance floors. The five levels consist of the entrance level Music Cafe, Discothèque for lovers of 70's disco revival, Kaleidoscope covering hits of the 60's-80's, the Paradogs Club for the best of house, trance and techno, and finally a chill out zone in the top floor café, playing a mellow selection of music and featuring cushions, rugs and soft lighting. Let’s party!!! Prague is unique! She gives you inspiration each moment even if your wandering on a bridge or enjoying a shake in Coffee Heaven, gives you power to step easily over anything, embrace you with her wild nightlife, takes you to cruises on Vlatava in the evenings and after one hour maximum two you felt in love madly and irrecoverably. But she leaves you sometimes, but only for a short time. She enjoys teasing!
