SKIMMING • Skimming - reading quickly to find main ideas. • Purpose – To get the overview and raise questions – Skim for main idea – Find out what happen next.

• What you skim depends on the importance of the passage and your familiarity with the subject. • Types of materials – study material,

• Based on your knowledge of the needs of your course. Is the passage important to understanding? • Will the information in the passage help you achieve a specific purpose?

• The Newspaper (quickly to get the general news of the day) • Magazines (quickly to discover which articles you would like to read in more detail) • Business and Travel Brochures (quickly to get informed)

1. As fast as possible, read the first few sentences (on paragraph). This tell you about the passage’s content. You can often figure out the setting and the tone from the first sentences.

2. Start leaving out materials On the third or fourth sentence, let your eyes hit only key words and phrases. Key words usually verbs and nouns.

3. Read all of the last few sentences (or paragraphs).

4. Try to identify the main idea and a few facts. Because of its nature, skimming does not provide you with detailed information. Skimming gives you a general notation of content rather than specific information.

1) Vertical Skimming Method - The reader may glide his eyes over the irrelevant content until he finds (exclusive what he is looking for skimming) ; - He may survey material, identifying main ideas and inferring (inclusive less important details skimming) ; - He may use non-directed skimming move his eyes down the page in a

2) The Square Span Method & The Narrow Column Method - Involve moving the eye over a small span – either the eye focuses on the centre of a page or all the words are placed in a narrow columns.

1) The person must be a flexible reader. 2) He must able to organized a series of data. 3) He must able to identify words rapidly, and relate them to each other. 4) He must develop attention and concentration. 5) He must be relaxed. 6) He must develop the perceptual skill. The person must look back and forth and down the page.

CONCLUSION Let us not forget: • Skimming is reading at the fastest speed which a person can accomplish. • It is used when a reader wishes to cover material in a hurry. • It is used when high comprehension is not required. • It can be 4 to 6 minutes faster than your average reading speed.
