Shape and volume Compressibility Expansibility Diffusibility Low density Exertion of pressure

• Gases take the shape of the container they are in. • Gases do not posses any definite shape or volume. • They will completely fill all the space available to them. • The freedom that gas particles have to move everywhere in the available space

Materials needed: • A few balloons • Vinegar • Baking soda • Bottle • Teaspoon

Pour some vinegar into a narrow – neck bottle until it is about a quarter full

Using a funnel, fill a balloon with half teaspoon of baking powder

Fit the balloon to the neck of the bottle. Be careful not to allow baking powder to fall into the bottle

Lift the balloon so that the baking powder falls into the bottle

Observe and explain what happens

EXPLANATION • Neutralisation between vinegar and baking soda will produce carbon dioxide gas. HC2H3O2(aq) + NaHCO3(aq) NaC2H3O2(aq) + H2O( ) + CO2(g)

The gas produced causes the balloon to expand. • First, we know that a gas has no definite volume or shape a gas will fill whatever volume is available to it.
