Marching Strike of Sittwe Government Technological University Students September 29, 2008

Over 300 students from Government Technological University took 6-mile long march from Ra-chan Prun to downtown of Sittwe (formerly Akyab), capital of Arakan, western Burma today afternoon at local time 2:00 pm. The ferries did not come to the university till after 2:00 pm which is the official leave hour. Therefore, the students informed the principle of the university and requested to call for the ferries, but they had been denied. Finally, they started to decide to walk from the campus to the downtown which is six miles long. While the students were walking, they had been barred at the Ban-dula junction by the cars where the university principle and local authorities altogether. The students did not take the ferries though they had been asked to get on the cars while they were on the way of walking to downtown. They peacefully walked until reaching to their targeted areas in downtown without responding anything to the authorities. Government Technological University is existed in outskirt of Sittwe, Ra-chan Prun area. It is closely situated within the former Western Command base where now Regional Operations Command (Da Ka Sa) is based.
