Undercover officers arrive with a rental truck for an arranged meeting with four people who wish to purchase “stolen” television sets.

Suspect

As Officer Canales walks to the front of the truck, he is followed by one buyer, who pulls a pistol. Gunfire is exchanged, and Canales drops to the ground.

Sequence of events during Tuesday night’s gunbattle that led to the death of Houston Police Officer Henry Canales, as well as the suspect who shot him in the parking lot of a southwest Houston drugstore, according to police reports:

Suspect

The buyer moves to the back of the truck and falls to the ground. A second officer, identified as R. Lopez, runs up and attempts to take the suspect into custody.

The suspect fires at least twice, missing the officer. Lopez returns fire and the suspect dies at the scene. Canales dies after being transported to Ben Taub General Hospital.
