Appeal Oct 2009 Support Flood-hit Victims in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka Seva Bharathi The worst Inflows in a centuary for the River Krishna and a 60years. At least 168 people have been killed in Andhra Pradesh and neighboring Karnataka due to floods resulting from heavy rains since Wednesday (1stOct). Andhra Pradesh is facing the worst ever floods in its 60 years, as 60 per cent of Kurnool district was submerged on Friday leaving thousands homeless and stranded without food and water. Nearly two lakh people have been evacuated to relief camps in the worst-affected districts of Kurnool, Mahabubnagar and Krishna district.

Media News The Hindu Bussinessline Rains in the last 48 hours have wreaked havoc inundating over 30 villages and the temple town of Mantralayam and Kurnool city, cutting off national highway, making it inaccessible. Similar is the situation within the droughtprone district of Mahbubnagar. The Government anticipates more flooding in Krishna district and Vijayawada in particular.

Bangalore: More than 130 people have died and hundreds are being evacuated due to heavy rains which have lashed the southern states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh over the past three days, officials said. Hundreds of people trapped by the floodwaters were stranded on rooftops waiting to be rescued. “Over 40,000 houses have been damaged,” an official at the Karnataka revenue ministry said. The water level of rivers Budhabalanga, Baitarani and Brahmani is inching towards the danger mark at a few places. Telegraph India Officials said a depression over the Bay of Bengal had emptied 860mm of rainwater into Kurnool and Mahboobnagar districts, causing the Tungabhadra and Krishna inflows to smash a 100-year-old record. Districts reporting a 60 per cent deficit monsoon were now surplus by 100 per cent.

Hundreds of devotees were stranded in the southern pilgrim town of Mantralayam, where the pontiff of the Raghavendra Swamy Mutt, Suchistrananda Theertha, was evacuated by a government helicopter after floodwaters entered the shrine. The starving pilgrims spent a sleepless night on rooftops, at bus stands and guesthouses.
