Lena Patten of Hilltop Interiors in Rosseau recommends having only one focal piece of art in a space, such as this fun print of bears canoeing.

ADD CHARACTER WITH THE RIGHT HOME ACCENTS By Karen Wehrstein Unique accents can change a home or cottage from a merely luxurious building to a truly special place. A one-of-a-kind touch can make your piece of Muskoka unmistakably and unforgettably yours. When it comes to selecting artwork for your home or cottage, interior designer Lena Patten recommends careful consideration. “Art is very personal, and it creates a lot of

interest and becomes the focal point of the room. With a great piece of art, you don’t need much more,” says Patten, who also sells furnishings, decorative accessories and original art at Hilltop Interiors in Rosseau. In fact she advises against two striking pieces in one room, as they will detract from each other. Every room should have a single special piece as a focal point, she says, whether it’s a painting, sculpture, distinctive carpet or unique lighting

fixture. “I wouldn’t put a totally modern landscape in a country house. I like for it to stand alone, but yet work with the environment that it’s in. When you walk into a room, you want to notice and appreciate the piece of art, but it shouldn’t jump out at you and slap you in the face.” She’ll design a room around a piece of art a client has fallen in love with, or help clients choose artwork to fit with an existing room design.

Art can even be incorporated outside the home or cottage. Totem poles, for instance, are in vogue in Muskoka and look great in the right place, says Patten, who sells totem poles ranging in height from eight feet to 10 feet. “One client put one near the Muskoka chairs around the fire pit,” she says. “As you drive by on the lake you can see it . . . it’s very cool.” There’s something about designs carved into wood that seems to catch people’s eye and imagination. Mike Cutting of Cutting Brothers Construction in Port Carling specializes in artistic carvings. His carving can be worked right into the building’s structure. Mantles, staircases, banisters, newel posts, doors and entranceways are the most popular areas and themes tend to be Muskoka flora or fauna, such as pine cones, oak leaves, herons, loons, dragonflies, fish, turtles and so on. But Cutting isn’t limited to that and has catered to some unique and unusual requests. “A guy wanted his family represented as bears,” he says. “I thought it would look very static, five bears. So I talked him into doing a scene of the bears doing a trout run.” He portrayed the animals to match the personalities of mom, dad and three kids, for a piece that will be forever treasured. This summer, by customer request, he hollowed out half a tree and mounted a granite urinal in it. “The customers come up with half the ideas,” he says. “We have a lot of fun.” Stained glass pieces are another way to add creativity to a home or cottage. Gail Wilson of Port Carling does one-of-a-kind stained glass windows of all sizes, as well as custom

lamps and other projects. She even once did a stained glass tabletop for an antique sewing machine. Two factors make her work unusual in the stained glass medium. First, she has an unusually representational approach, and therefore is willing to take on subjects that are not typically the subject of stained glass art, such as pictures of old Muskoka lodges and classic boats. “I try and stay away from the look of it being like a puzzle,” she says. Second is her methodology of transforming existing patterns in the glass into compositional elements. Flowing lines in a raw stained glass pane becomes the sweep of a mane of hair; a random pattern becomes the Picassoesque form of a woman’s body; a smoke-like plume in the glass ends up belching from the smoke stack of a steamboat.

“What I do is take the glass and decide what it’s going to be,” the award-winning artist says who has been practicing stained glass for about nine years. Wilson’s pieces don’t necessarily have to be installed into windows, but can also work well on walls with a light behind them. “I shine the light on the wall and it bounces back through the glass,” she says. She also does custom installations. She once did the doors for a set of kitchen cabinets. You can use stained glass for interior dividing walls, she suggests, or a backlit sign behind a bar. “They’re all art,” she says. “It’s like making a painting with glass.” Furniture and accessories can be art too, particularly when designs and concepts are mixed in exciting new ways. Tary Roossien of Urban Rustic Living in Huntsville likes to add wood to a home, such as this antique monk’s table, made of elm. Wooden furniture with a look of weight to it, with the grain showing through is her preference. She thinks it makes a space feel more comfortable.

Huntsville, which is owned by Tary and Ed Roossien, combines natural elements with a sophisticated design and is a source for a full range of home décor items. Visitors who step inside the store will notice a lot of wooden furniture, much of which is antique. “Wood makes everything natural, more comfortable and cozy, especially old wood,” says Tary Roossien, an interior designer. She likes the items to have weight and the grain to show through, so “you can see the life of the wood in the product.” For instance, she sold an armoire with doors made from gates that are 300 years old. “We left them intact so the whole front is very authentic. They have such a beautiful profile, they have such a texture . . . almost like a castle sort of look,” says Roossien. “When we do design we always layer in the old, as well as something that’s completely off. If the home is a lighter patina and stain, we’ll put in one chocolate piece. But it’s got to be a really dynamic piece.” Roosien also specializes in lighting, which can have a dramatic affect on the look of a home or cot-

tage. One line of lighting fixtures she offers combine very old blond driftwood, unstained, to show its natural colour. Topping it off is an urban-style shade. “The electric piece goes up the middle,” she explains, “and the top is a completely square shade, on a log cabin-style stack of driftwood.” She also sells a floor lamp that has legs and a post made from the branches and trunks of birch trees, with a shade of handmade paper. Even the exterior of a home or cottage can be personalized with accents that make it stand out. One such item that adds distinction is a cupola. In practical terms, it’s a ventilation device. In aesthetic terms it can be, “the crowning jewel on top,” in the words of Judy Cotter, who with her husband Kevin, owns Country Classics Cupolas. Starting the business from a single-car garage in Bobcaygeon in 1989, Kevin Cotter originally supplied architectural trim and mouldings. “He recognized the appeal of cupolas,” says Judy Cotter. “Unable to find a source with the quality and style he wanted, he designed our hexagonal cupolas. models are not based on specific historical traditions, they do reflect historical flavour. For example, our bell-top roof style is similar to the copper domes seen in Europe.” A cupola, she says, provides curb appeal. “Some rooflines are very boring,” she notes, especially with modern technology having eliminated the old-style stone chimney. “A cupola can add a focal point to a roof, break up a roofline, change the height of a building, or balance something like a garage that’s a step down. It really draws attention to the building because it is unusual.” There’s the practical aspect too. A cupola can prevent or cure problems due to the build up of heat or humidity in an attic or a garage, helping extend the life of rafters, insulation and roofing material. As well as its own designs, Country Classics will do custom work and build to designs submitted by clients. Finally, if you want to depart thoroughly from traditional home accent pieces and explore what is truly edgy, you can look at high art pieces such as the outdoor sculp-

tures of Dennis Gill. Influenced by the “land art” sculptural movement in the 1960s, during which proponents constructed fairly large pieces which always reflected their setting, Gill creates both original and commissioned pieces. “Though I make more autonomous objects that deal with other issues,” he says, “a large part of what I’ve done for the last 25 years has had to do with making sculpture in the landscape that addresses specific considerations of the place in which it is.” He will consult extensively with the homeowners regarding their property, the building, the view lines and the landscaping. “Is there a particular rise in the landscape that you really enjoy?” he will ask. “Is that a focal point, is it a departure point? Do you look at the foreground and want the background drawn into proximity?” Famous for his use of the snake motif to symbolize life and regeneration, Gill says that the catalytic nature of his work doesn’t preclude figurative pieces.

“I think my work is highly representational, but it’s representational of a different kind of dimension.” In Dwight, his current home, Gill was asked by a family to create a piece in memory of their son, who had been killed in a welding accident, and he’s been pleased by the response of both family and community. Sculpture has always had a commemorative function, he notes, in all cultures, first evidenced in grave markers. “The work addressing the notion of the spirit,” he says, “is pretty fundamental in human beings.” Gill’s wish, at heart, is that his clients see themselves in the work he does for them. “I believe that, in having art in one’s life, the enduring components have more to do with satiating spirit than ego. I see artwork as being catalytic to a higher level of consciousness.” In sum, bringing a slice of pure human creativity into your space adds a dimension far beyond the everyday. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

Golfers play a round at Diamond In The Ruff. Golf enthusiasts can live right by the course at the Diamond’s Edge fractional development.

LIVING JUST A CHIP SHOT FROM THE GREEN By Allan Cook The first stop after a nice round on the links is always the clubhouse; it’s a perfect place to relax, think about the game, relive the good moments with friends and get ready for the drive home. But more and more savvy golf lovers have traded the drive for a simple short stroll from the clubhouse to their front steps. Last year, Michael and Janet Barnard purchased a share of a cottage at the Diamond’s Edge fractional ownership development on Nutt Lake in Utterson, alongside the renowned Diamond In The Ruff golf course. “The main attraction is it gives you the opportunity to play golf, and you don’t have to drive; you just come out of your cottage and walk across the road and there you are,” Michael Barnard quietly boasts. “They even keep your clubs and clean them and have them out for you every morning when you’re ready to play.” The Barnards had been looking for a retirement property in Muskoka but didn’t want to balance feeling obligated to spend time at a cottage of their own with retaining their memberships at their beloved home golf course in Toronto. An ad for Diamond’s Edge introduced them to the shared 14

ownership concept and the perfect solution to their conundrum. “It just happens to fit what we want – which is a few weeks up north, but not the time and responsibility of the cottage, plus an opportunity to play golf,” Barnard says. “This is our second summer there; we were some of the first people to join and it’s been the best investment we’ve ever made so far.” A 9-hole course, the cozy esthetic of the challenging and enjoyable Diamond In The Ruff has been carried across to the Diamond’s Edge development, limited to only 15 Normerica post and beam cottages on 33 1/2 private acres overlooking quiet, scenic Nutt Lake. The developers custom designed the furniture with Munro’s Furnishings of Innisfil to complement the rustic beauty of the post and beam designs, which features an open loft and spacious deck and screen porch. “It’s got a real cottage feel,” says Rhondi Peacock of Diamond’s Edge. “People want a cottage; they don’t want a town home, and we are stand-alone homes.” Each three-bedroom, two-bath cottage has 10 shares available, which start at $89,900. Peacock points out that having the cottages all share the

same basic format means the equity of each will grow at the same level. “You’re not mixing up million dollar homes with a thousand dollar home. They’re all of equal value,” she explains. The first five cottages were ready for occupancy in May of 2007, and owner feedback has been incorporated into enhancements for the second and third phases. Phase two is currently ready for occupancy. “We’ve done some favourable enhancements through owner feedback,” Peacock explains. “Everything that we’ve done is based on what the owners thought could be improved.” Owners pay a small annual fee that covers everything from utilities, taxes and insurance to maintenance, housekeeping and their golf fees. Built in 1993, Diamond In The Ruff, designed by Ted George, has been called “the Augusta of the North” due to its exquisite landscaping and greens care. “We have 12 greenskeepers for nine holes and one full-time person on flowers,” says Peacock. “It’s just breathtaking.” Michael Barnard agrees. “It’s an absolutely lovely 9-hole golf course, beautifully kept and interesting to play,” he says, “And we like the cottages, they’re

which we’d never done before, and we just went snowshoeing on the golf course every day and really enjoyed it,” Barnard says. “It was beautiful up there.”

Michael Barnard recommends anyone looking into a shared ownership golf property take their time and do their research. “I think you need to look around and see what there is on offer,” he says. “You need to look around see what the calibre of the golf course is, and also you need to decide whether the accommodation is good.” Of course, Barnard feels that he and his wife have found the perfect location. “I would certainly recommend Diamond’s Edge. I think it’s one of the better ones out there,” he says. “We’ve been very happy here. We’ve enjoyed it immensely.” While a share of a golf vacation property is an excellent option for some, there are those who wish to have a year-round home next to their favourite course. Fortunately, there are developments in Muskoka catering to that very dream, the newest of which is The Homes of Huntsville Downs. Originally known as Settler’s Ridge, the development was renamed after the recent procurement of land around the 83-year-old Huntsville Downs Golf Club. Golf course living really appeals to them. Huntsville’s a vibrant community, so let’s open it up and let’s do it now.” Buckley notes that today’s emptynesters are active and interested in arts and culture as well as leisure activities. “These are active adults that are retiring; they’re not just going to sit on their front porch all week,” she says with a laugh. “They plan to be busy. They plan to be active. Huntsville has a vibrant downtown, and it’s a very active community. It has the fabulous new Algonquin Theatre, unique little shops and the nice mix of restaurants and everything. We just really feel that the subdivision is a great fit, and if we can add that golf component to it that makes it all the more appealing.” Where tennis might have been the

equipment is grouped together in a electronics cabinet located in the office. Typically with these set ups, any CD players, IPods, DVD players or music servers (hard drives designed specifically for music storage) will be stored in a similar central location. Each source can then be controlled using LCD touchpads mounted in the walls throughout the home. The homeowner is also able to control the system through an LCD remote control which can be used to change the TV channel inside or adjust the volume from the outside patio. Trew also installed a simple lighting control system in the main living areas of the home. Because the audio/visual equipment and lighting controls communicate through the keypads, Trew says this allows for an interesting feature. “From his bedroom, at the end of the night, if he’s not sure he shut all the lights off, we give him an all-off switch. So he hits one button and that can take everything off throughout the cottage,” Trew says. With any installation it is important to work with a professional to get exactly what you want out of your cottage’s entertainment system. “You have to feel comfortable,” he says. “You’re putting your dream cottage in a bunch of other people’s hands and hoping at the end of the day when they’re finished that you can walk into it and it’ll be what you envisioned.” For new builds, the process of outfitting a home with the latest in audio/visual equipment can begin as early as the groundbreaking stage. Dale Webb, co-owner of Avery Audio in Dorset,

says it’s important to start thinking about wiring needs as early as possible. “From a consumer’s point of view, they should really think hard about it as the plumbers and electricians are just starting. That gives them a couple of weeks to make decisions,” he says. Webb makes initial contact with clients early to start walking through house plans and decid-

By Emma Lovell Years ago, a trip to the cottage in Muskoka meant a quiet escape from the fast-paced life of the city. Televisions and computers were left behind for campfires and board games. But for many, the days of the rustic retreat are long gone and the cottage is becoming a place to showcase easy living and the latest in home entertainment systems. Entertaining Interiors is a company based out of Barrie that specializes in outfitting cottages and homes with complete entertainment systems. Brad Trew, the company’s president, says though many still consider the cottage a getaway, they can’t live without the convenience of home. “When they get to the cottage, reality sets in and they realize they still want to be connected,” he says. The solution is to install electronics in discreet and unobtrusive ways, often in walls and behind cabinetry. Some people even look to custom installations that allow screens to drop down from behind canoes on the ceiling or hide behind a painting or mirror. He says this helps people retain the Muskoka feel of their cottage without forfeiting their technology. “With everything hidden away, they walk into their cottage and it still has that rustic feel, it still has that Muskoka look to it and they still feel as though they can relax there,” he says. Trew recalls a project he started last summer near Port Carling. At this cottage he installed a complete audio/video system with a high definition television. He also installed several speakers in the ceiling of the home. All of the supporting

With high definition television and intricate keypad systems, wiring needs are changing and Webb says it’s easiest and most cost efficient to do all the wiring before the walls are closed in. He says many people don’t think about electronics until the build is complete, which can be a costly mistake. When wiring a new home, Webb also suggests homeowners think about wiring for the future. “It’s important for the consumer to tell the professional what they might see down the road. Ask questions. What’s new coming? What’s the new trend? Put an extra wire in now because at least that leaves the door open for future changes,” he says. At a Lake of Bays cottage Webb

worked on last spring, wiring for the future was a major consideration. The homeowners discovered the importance of this step the hard way. “One of the things that we learned with the very first installation that we did in the city was when you try to retrofit, it doesn’t work,” says the homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous due to privacy concerns. When they started thinking about their new cottage, the Markhambased couple spoke with Webb about what they were looking for then and how their needs might change in the future. When Webb began, aesthetics were a major concern. In an effort to conceal the equipment, Webb installed speakers hidden in the ceiling throughout the home and

painted them to match the light fixtures. Most of the equipment was hidden away in a cabinet in the basement and controlled by in-wall keypads throughout the home. He also put a home theatre system in the basement. Due to space constraints posed by a stone fireplace, the view of the TV was compromised by the large mantle. As a solution, Webb mounted the TV on a swivelling arm inside the cabinetry that allowed the homeowner to pull the TV out from the wall and position it so it can be seen from any seat in the room. When the TV isn’t in use it can be tucked back into the cabinets. Webb also installed more than just what is visible. Inside the walls, wires lay waiting, in case the family’s needs ever change. “It’s wired for what we need now as well as what the future plans are, so that just makes it very easy,” the homeowner says. For instance, they are considering installing an extra TV on the upper floor to help elderly family members who may not want to go downstairs. Also, Internet access was spread throughout the home so

that when the homeowners retire to the area and need a home office, they can still stay connected. Unfortunately, Internet access was a major challenge with this

project, which is a common problem throughout Muskoka. “Access to Internet is definitely an issue. The problem that a lot of people have is that high-speed . . . is

very localized to the villages and towns,” Webb says. He adds that homeowners have several Internet options including wireless, if a tower is nearby, and satellite Internet. Another option that is gaining in popularity is accessing Internet through cellular towers. The final decision usually depends on cottage location and cost, Webb says. With so many choices, it’s easy for a homeowner to get overwhelmed. “The industry is becoming very specialized and it’s important to consult a professional to get an idea of what’s out there,” Webb says. David Johann, owner of David’s Muskoka Audio Video in Bracebridge, says it’s important to choose a system that is right for the individual. He says customers are usually looking for equipment that is easy to use and reliable. “We want to keep it really simple. That’s the key issue,” he says. “When you’re going out to look for home automation and electronics, it’s great only if you can work it. If you can’t work it, you just spent all this money for nothing.”

Although simplicity is often the goal, Johann says systems are becoming more complex. Increasingly, people are turning to complete home automation systems that integrate multiple services in the home. “You can really turn it up a notch with automated lighting, heating and air conditioning and surveillance cameras. These can all be displayed through keypads.” Most people who are installing home automation systems are looking towards automated lighting, Johann says. These lighting systems include options like emergency settings that light up a pathway out of the house at the touch of a button. You can also turn the lights on and off remotely, often through the Internet or a cell phone. Some systems even sample how you use the lights in your home and can replicate that on a routine basis. Johann says many are wary of these systems, worried that they will be too difficult to operate. “It just requires a little bit of planning right at the start,” he says. “The thing to urge is that we like to keep it simple. We sell to very intel-

ligent people all the time, but they don’t maybe have time in their busy life to have to learn how to turn a light on.” If a reliable and easy-to-use system is installed and programmed correctly, they can make life significantly easier, he says. With so much new technology

on the market, Johann says the best idea is to consult a professional who can help you choose a system that’s tailored to what your individual needs are. Although home automation systems are wired into new builds, there are options for homeowners with pre-existing homes and cot-

tages as well. “You might not do quite as much, but we can certainly do it,” Johann says. “It’s just more time involved and more costly.” Common solutions include dropping wires through attics or ventilation ducts. There is also an array of wireless equipment for things like speakers, computers and televisions available. However, not everyone is ready to embrace wireless technology yet. “With anything that’s wireless, I don’t care what it is, there are always little quirks and problems,” says Webb at Avery Audio. “Wires are always better than wireless.” Webb adds that wireless technology is quickly evolving and perhaps in a few years, with new advancements, he will begin recommending wireless equipment to his clients. No matter what equipment you choose, the best idea is to start planning early and consult a professional. Entertainment systems are often one of the last things homeowners think about, but something they will get the most enjoyment out of in the long run.

705-635-9860 What types of services does a planner offer?

If you are building new, or re-developing, a planner can provide you with best possible solutions for the use of your lot. Planners can recommend the types, size, and location of the buildings you want to construct, or re-build, to suit your individual needs. If a planning application is needed, they can prepare all the required documentation and represent you at township council and committee meetings.

Marie Poirier One of the realtor’s duties as set out in the Code of Ethics, is that of competence, and a realtor should not represent someone without knowledge of the properties or area that they are working in. The answer to that question would be how much do they work here and are they familiar with the peculiarities of Muskoka? Have they sold anything here? What do they know about waterfront properties? Are they familiar with the other listings on the market and have they seen them?

Q

Nancy Baker

Start with good quality necessities. A good bed is a must – quality mattress, box spring and solid frame. Purchase a used dresser in good condition that can be used for other purposes at a later date. In the living area, consider two comfortable chairs in a neutral colour. This will give you more flexibility when adding other pieces later. Second hand stores and auctions are a good source for picking up good deals. Furniture that is multi-purpose will be the best investment at this point. Buy the best you can afford. Buy what you love and you will have it for many years. Nancy Baker

705-788-1148 I am considering purchasing a waterfront property in Muskoka. My lawyer has advised me the property is subject to a deeded right-of-way, in favour of my neighbour, for the purpose of access to the lake. I don’t want the neighbour to cross my property – what can I do?

Rights-of-way, which grant a right of access over one person’s property to the adjacent property owner for many purposes, are common in Muskoka. In almost all circumstances, the owner of the land over which a right-of-way has been granted, cannot block the other person’s right of use. A deeded right-ofway cannot be extinguished by the owner of the land, unless the person to whom the right-of-way has been given, consents in writing to give up that right. You should always discuss any potential land purchase with your lawyer, before signing a binding agreement of purchase and sale, or at the very least, make your offer conditional on seeking your lawyer’s advice.
