SEMINAR ON ELECTRONIC BRAKING SYSTEM(EBS) PRESENTED BY: SMARAK MOHANTY Regd No - 0521212015
CONTENTS Introduction Disadvantage of CABS What is EBS? Share Market Study of EBS EBS Components Operation Benefits of EBS Objectives
INTRODUCTION • Development started in early 1980’s • Achieved full development team strength in early 1990’s • Active field testing began mid-1990’s • Production began in July, 1996 • EBS systems are now standard production in Europe
DISADVANTAGE OF COMPRESSED AIR BRAKING SYSTEM
time delay and superfluous energy consumption because of the compressibility of air. relatively low pressures and therefore big dimensions. contamination, water content, oil and coke in the air.
WHAT IS EBS? EBS, or "brake-by-wire,"integrates anti-lock braking
system(ABS) technology, automatic traction control (ATC) and other key Vehicle control system features to deliver the next generation of braking control. utilizes electronics for the control side of the vehicle's braking
system
. An electronic signal replaces the air signal sent by the brake
pedal to activate the brakes, improving stopping distances and braking system performance
EBS COMPONENTS CENTRAL BRAKE UNIT(CBU) Combines the functional groups central ECU brake signal transmitter proportional relay valve Provides the primary brake management function for front axle, rear axle and trailer pressure control and evaluates the sensor signals Generates an electrical signal and pneumatic back-up pressure from the driver’s pedal actuation; controls the required frontaxle brake pressure automatically Communicates with other vehicle systems and diagnostic interfaces
Brake signal transmitter Generates an electrical signal and pneumatic backup pressure from the driver's pedal actuation
Central module Braking system ECU Controls all essential brake management
functions for the front axle, the rear axle and trailer pressure control,as well as front axle ABS control Evaluates sensor signals and communicates as well as the diagnostic interfaces
Proportional relay valve Performs front-axle braking pressure control
Rear-axle modulator Controls the rear-axle brake pressure and actuates the electro-pneumatic trailer control valve Electro-pneumatic trailer control valve Regulates trailer control pressure
OPERATION EBS consists of a single-circuit electropneumatic section, supported by a dual circuit, pneumatic section as a redundancy. Depending on the pedal position, the brake signal transmitter generates electrical signals and pneumatic pressures. The electrical signals are used to control the electronic braking system. modulator.
The pneumatic signals are used in redundancy case only and perform – to a limited extent – the same functions. The electrical signal is transmitted to the central module. According to the vehicle’s load situation, the system calculates the appropriate pressures for the individual brake cylinders, causing deceleration of the vehicle. The determined values are then sent to the proportional relay valve and via the system’s data bus to the rearaxle
BENEFITS OF EBS EBS improves braking comfort EBS increases vehicle safety EBS optimizes brake wear EBS makes maintenance easier
Reduces the number of brake system components and air lines Enhanced diagnostics of the complete braking system Detects brake fade and notifies the driver if wear levels become
critical Provides more predictable braking control Shortened stopping distances Improved vehicle stability and driver control Brake "feel" like a passenger car
ELECTRONIC BRAKING SYSTEM (EBS) WITH ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
OBJECTIVES • Detect potential spin-out situations
• Assist driver in keeping intended course during cornering maneuvers • Stabilize vehicle when lateral traction limits are exceeded –Controls tractor and / or trailer brakes – Speed reduction by engine and brake control
