ROCK ON WILL SET NEW PARAMETERS: FARHAN THE

overwhelming response that his film Rock On received has taken director-actor-singer Farhan Akhtar by surprise. Farhan feels that the film has done much more than entertain people for a mere couple of hours. He feels his film has spurred an Indi-rock revival. He said, “Suddenly there’s an upsurge of rock. We suddenly have an Indi-rock revival. Regional bands are playing all over. Newspaper articles are being written about desi rock. I feel we've started something we can’t control. It’s all very encouraging.” According to him, Rock On has created a certain parameter on which other films based on music will be gauged. “People within the industry feel more adventurous after the film. We want to carry our musical togetherness forward,” Farhan said. He was overwhelmed by the response the movie’s music received at a concert in New Delhi. “It was unbelievable. Before the film’s release, we had performed in Mumbai and Pune. But the experience in Delhi post-release was something else. The audience knew us and the songs,” said a thrilled Farhan. However, Farhan isn’t keen on reprising his Rock On role. When asked whether he would play Adi again, he said, “If Abhishek (the director) wants to make another film, he can go ahead. But, I’m not for it. To me, Rock On is a sequel to Dil Chahta Hai. Both transported me to the same emotional space. Now, I’ve had enough of it,” he added.

KINNG KUMAR TAKES A DIG AT KING KHAN

MS DHONI MAKES HIS MUSICAL DEBUT WELL,

it was definitely a cocktail of celebrities at the music video launch of Bhojpuri superstar Manoj Tiwari's wife, Rani. The event, which started off as per schedule for a change, was a huge success. And the entry of every cricket lover’s favourite, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, made the night memorable. Welcomed with loud applause and plenty of cheers, everyone was visibly excited on seeing the cricket icon. If you are wondering what he was doing there in the first place, let’s say he was the star of the evening for reasons more than one would know. Dhoni features in two songs from the album, making it his debut music video appearance! The other guests who graced the occasion were Manoj Bajpai, politician Sanjay Nirupam, Aadesh Shrivastav, lyricist Shabbir Ahmed and lots of compatriots from the Bhojpuri industry, who turned up to show their support. Sanjay Nirupam took the opportunity to appeal to those present to help the victims of Kosi. It was announced that a percentage of the proceeds received from the album would be donated to Kosi victims. The cake was cut by Rani and Dhoni while Manoj Bajpai uncorked the champagne. Rani also agreed to sing a couple of lines from the title track which features Dhoni in its video. All the guests were mingling and chatting over Indian starters. A proud Manoj Tiwari was beaming at his wife's debut album release and taking care of her guests.

PRIYANKA IS BOBBY’S SWEETHEART

BOBBY Deol says he would’ve been in a fix if Priyanka Chopra hadn't agreed to play a deglamourised role in his recentlyreleased home production Chamku. “Priyanka is a sweetheart. She plays a simple girl in Chamku. Most heroines wouldn’t want to get into that space, but she agreed,” Bobby said. While Bobby plays a Maoist in the film, Priyanka, who plays his love interest, is a schoolteacher and is seen mainly in plain chiffons. Bobby now has another problem. After losing 10 kg for his role in Chamku, he is now eating plenty, which has his family very worried. “It wasn’t easy for me to lose all that weight. But once I made up my mind, I did it. Now, I’m trying to gain weight, so I’m on a chocolate binge. I’m even stealing them from my children,” laughs Bobby. The brutal film was also in the news for its unusual title. Commenting on that, Bobby said, “I thought Chamku was just a working title. But it's my character's name. AAMIR KHAN’S HAIRY TALE

AAMIR Khan's Ghajini is the most talked-about film of 2008. For one crucial scene, he needs to have a full head of hair. But, at present, Aamir sports a short crew cut. A source close to Aamir Khan tells us more. “Aamir Khan is very busy these days as he is shooting some important climactic scenes. During these scenes, Aamir’s look, particularly his hairstyle, has to be different. And so, for all the climax shots he is going back to his old, longer hairdo. Aamir is also working out for these scenes as he wants to give his 100 per cent to it. He sometimes shoots in Hyderabad and, at times, near Mumbai,” says the source. The source added, “Apart from the climactic scenes there are two songs that still need to be picturised. These songs are linked to the climax scenes but they do not feature Aamir Khan in them. So the remaining part of Ghajini will take some time to be completed. In the next three weeks, one song will be shot, while another song will be shot later in the month. And after that, Aamir will be shooting his most important scenes.” Ghajini is all set to release a day after Christmas.

SOHAIL KHAN SAYS HELLO AFTER

God Tussi Great Ho, Sohail Khan will now be seen in Atul Agnihotri’s Hello, based on the book One Night @ the Call Center. Sohail says, “I play a character called Arjun. I know Chetan Bhagat will be very upset if he comes to know that I have not read the book, but I am a person who believes in doing things his own way. I do not even read my dialogues for my scene. When we learn our dialogues by heart it becomes mechanical. So, I thought that if I read the book it would work negatively.” He adds, “I went to the sets every day and after a few days I understood my character. Atul was very clear but I did it my way. I saw the film while I was dubbing for it and I genuinely believe that Sharman (Joshi) is the best actor around.” He further reveals, “The story starts with Salman bhai. He is the narrator. Arbaaz is making a guest appearance as Atul wanted to have all three of us in his film. Salman is playing himself in the film. Though all of us are there in the film, it’s only Arbaaz and me who share screen space in one song.” On Katrina involvement, he says, “She is surely our lucky mascot. Look at Singh Is Kinng. I cannot talk much about her role in Hello but she plays an important one. You only have to put her picture on the poster and the film will be a hit.” October 2008

THIS shloka talks of the 12 Jyotirlingas — the places every Hindu must visit during his lifetime. Through this 12-part series, you will be able to complete this journey. As the shloka says, the first stop is Somnath, which is located on the southern coast of Saurashtra. Legend has it that Shiva, in previous eons, was referred to as Mrityunjaya, Kaalagnirudra, Amritesa, Anamaya, Kritivasa and Bhairavanatha at Somnath. Somnath has been standing since the beginning of time and was built by the moon god. The temple has imposing architecture and is a beautiful sight, facing the blue expanse of the Arabian Sea. A short distance from the Somnath temple is Bakhla Tirth, where Lord Krishna was said to have been struck by the stray arrow of a Bhil tribal. The present temple, Kailash Mahameru Prasada, is in the Chalukya style and reflects the inherent skill of the Sompuras, Gujarat’s master masons. It is believed that the Somnath temple was originally made of gold, and then was rebuilt by Ravana in silver, later by Krishna in wood and then by Bhimdev in stone. Somnath was once the most revered shrine in the country, for it had one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (the glowing Lingas), which holds special significance to Hindus. It is said that people from the remotest parts of the country came to worship Lord Shiva here. Two thousand Brahmins (priests) served the idol and a golden chain attached to a huge bell plate announced the commencement of prayers. The temple is constructed in the Solanki style. Bachchan has wrapped up his Unforgettable Tour. But he is still in the fashion capital of the world — France. This time around it’s not for a holiday, but to shoot for the cover page of L’Homme’s inaugural issue. The photo shoot took place in Paris and we asked Mr Bachchan if it felt any different from gracing the numerous movie magazines that he has been on. “Yes, I am in Paris now for the shoot of the cover of this magazine. I have not done fashion modelling for magazines, so I shall only know of the experience later. I would not expect much difference between film and fashion shoots. Both propel your face and what you wear to the reader,” says Mr. Bachchan. Always known for his sense of style and well cut suits, Bachchan is surprisingly modest when we ask him if he sees himself as the face of fashion and style. “I am embarrassed to be doing this at the age of 66 and cannot imagine myself setting any kind of face for this, but a friend asked and I am doing it,” he says modestly. “I do not know what fashion means. But I do know that a couple of individuals in Italy, France, the UK and the USA decide every year or season what mankind should be wearing to look fashionable and the entire world starts emulating them,” he adds. So what is more important — being in fashion or being stylish? “I guess being stylish is preferred, simply because it is devoid of any outside intrusion. But then it is also often stylish to be fashionable and vice versa!” signs off the superstar as he gets ready to face the camera once again.

ROHIT SHETTY SPENDS BOMB ON SONG

THE cast of Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Returns shot a special song for the promotion of the film. It’s said to be the costliest song shot in Bollywood. Giving us more details, Rohit Shetty tells us, “The song will feature the whole cast, right from Ajay Devgan to Shreyas Talpade. The whole song was shot in Filmistan, but the look was Goan. The dance sequence has been choreographed by Ganesh Acharya. The song is called Tha Karke. And yes, it is the most expensive song ever shot in Bollywood. The cost of shooting the song has been more than Rs. 6 crore which makes it all the more special for all of us.” Shreyas Talpade, who is a part of the cast, adds, “It was like a cast reunion. In this song, the entire cast is seen dancing as it is for the promotion of the movie. I’m sure the dance sequence will be appreciated by all our fans and the song will be a chartbusters soon. The whole set up was very expensive. It was a great pleasure working on this film. MALLIKA GETS UPSET AFTER Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam bombed at the box office, sources close to Mallika tell us that Sherawat is upset with the film’s director Sanjay Chhel. In fact, she sent him some not-so-polite messages even while watching the film. “Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam took a long time to be made. Mallika was actively promoting the film, but when she saw the finished product and the reviews her acting received, she decided to let her feelings known to both Sanjay Chhel and Ratan Jain,” says our source. Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam is Sanjay Chhel’s directorial debut and Mallika was hoping to change her

persona and appeal in the industry with the film. However, she realised the film had only backfired for her. “She sent Sanjay some nasty SMSes. She felt that she had been portrayed cheaply and that wasn’t how she expected the film to turn out. Now, she isn’t even taking his calls,” says the source. It is not just Mallika who is annoyed with the film’s director. “When Rahul Bose was asked what he thought about the film at a press conference in Pune, he simply walked out as he didn’t know what to say without running down the film or Chhel!” says the source.

FERGIE COMES TO BOLLYWOOD

AFTER rapper Snoop Dogg, yet another international pop star will be a part of a Bollywood film. Fergie, singer of the band Black Eyed Peas, will be a part of the much-awaited Akshay Kumar-Sanjay Dutt starrer Blue. “After all the hype the Snoop Dogg video created for Singh is Kinng, the producers of Blue want to bring Fergie to Bollywood. Akshay will croon with the hot singer for a video for the film,” informs a source. Unlike Snoop’s video, this one will see the diva flying down to India to shoot for the video. “The plan at the moment is to bring Fergie to Mumbai and record the song and shoot the video. And like most Fergie videos this one too is expected to grab eyeballs. Ashtvinayak — the producers of the film — and director Anthony D’Souza are going to direct the video themselves. The deal is almost through between the producers and Fergie’s record label,” informs the source. With the hype already surrounding the action-packed Blue, we can’t help but wonder what will happen once Fergie adds her flavour to the film. ABOUT FERGIE: Thirty-three-year-old Stacy Ann Ferguson, or Fergie as she is popularly known, grabbed the limelight as the lead vocalist for the hip-hop group the Black Eyed Peas. MODAKS

Ingredients

½ grated coconut, 200gms water, 200gms Basmati rice flour, 2tsp poppy seeds, 2tsp sesame seeds, ½ cardamom, ½ nutmeg, jaggery and ghee.

Preparation




Boil the water, add a little salt and the rice flour. Stir with a wooden spoon till thick. Once thickened, put the gas off and cover the dish. Place your hands in cold water and kneed the hot dough until it is soft. Make rice flour cups. For the filling: Fry the coconut in some ghee. Add jaggery to taste. Add the poppy, sesame, cardamom and nutmeg. Put the filling into the cups and seal. Steam for another 10-15 minutes.

PANEER TIKKA

Ingredients

2 cups paneer, cut in cubes, ½ cup thick yogurt 2 tsp red chilli powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp ginger paste, ½ tsp garlic paste, 1 tsp dried fenugreek leaves, ½ tsp garam masala, 1 tsp tandoori masala, juice of 1 lime, salt to taste, cilantro, finely chopped

Preparation

Mix all ingredients from yogurt onwards. Add paneer cubes and mix well till all the cubes are covered with the marinade. Refrigerate for 4-5 hours. To make paneer tikkas, preheat the oven or grill. In the meantime, arrange the marinated vegetables and paneer on a skewer. Cook over charcoal or in the oven until some brown spots appear. Do not overcook.

Yes, I’m finally back with one of my closest friends. Goldie is like my brother and when he mentioned this story to me, I was with him right away. It didn’t matter how long it was going to take. We were going all out. Look at the scale at which we have done this. We traveled all over and it’s been an absolute blast.

 Jumping off buildings is fun?

(Laughs) Not if you are my wife, but otherwise it’s great fun. Driving fast cars, playing with swords—it was great fun for me. C’mon, it’s a guy thing! I love Star Wars. Growing up I was obsessed with the movies and still am. So, even if we couldn’t have the original light sabers, this was fun!

 You shot in the deserts of Namibia and then in rainy Czech

Republic. Tell us about that… I think one of the greatest joys of our work comes from the locales we get to travel to. It’s absolutely amazing. The places where we shot for Drona were just breathtaking. You know, there is one particular scene in the film where we create a whirlwind of sand around me and while we were filming, there would often be sandstorms. The whole area would be covered in sand as far as you could see. And then, we would spend the rest of the day trying to level out stuff to ensure continuity. That’s when you realise the power of nature. In Czech, it was a completely different feel—stone paved roads, old buildings. It was all old-school but nice in its own way.

 Your mum is a part of the film. Does that make up for being

away from home? Mum is a great actor and I love every role of hers. You get to learn so much from her and Pa. They are both legends. It always helps to have family around, especially when you are doing shoots away from home for a long time. But, in this case, I was working with a crew that is all family. Goldie is my brother… and so, it was all good even when she wasn’t around.

 Drona was delayed for the longest time. Does it frustrate you

as an actor when your film doesn’t release? Sure. I think that’s goes for everyone, not just me. All of us put in a lot of effort to get the film ready. Plus, in the case of Drona, it wasn’t just held up. We wanted to be a 100 per cent sure about the special effects and the overall look of the film. And that’s why it got delayed. I think we all knew it was for the film and therefore, it was ok.

ESHA Deol’s awaited film Hijack released in September. While all actors hope their films do well, with Esha, it is much more than that. The actress’ last release One Two Three bombed at the box office earlier this year. An industry insider tells us that things are definitely not looking good for Esha. “The last time Esha gave a hit was No Entry in 2005. In the last two-and-a-half years, she did six films, all of which sank without a trace,” says the source. Luck too has played a hand in the actress’ career going for a toss. She was supposed to have been a part of Jannat opposite Emraan Hashmi. “A few days into filming, the actress called in sick. A couple of weeks later, the buzz in the industry suggested that Esha had been dropped from the line-up and was replaced with a relative newcomer. That Jannat went on to become one of the biggest hits of 2008 is something that would have definitely pricked Esha,” adds the source. With films Pyaare Mohan, Cash, Darling, Just Married and Ankahee failing at the box office, the film offers are also drying up. In fact, mummy Hema Malini recently announced that she was going to produce a film for her daughter because filmmakers weren’t offering Esha the right kind of roles. “This film was supposed to give Esha’s career a boost. But now, the film has been shelved as Hemaji can’t find any hero ready to work opposite Esha,” says an aide of the yesteryear star. There have been rumours about Esha’s irresponsible behaviour in the industry. “She doesn’t turn up for shoots on time. Or, she’ll just take off on a holiday. It’s happened on many occasions that directors are wary of taking her on,” says an actress.

SALMAN KHAN HEADS TO LONDON

SALMAN Khan will be heading to London next week to film

Vipul Shah’s London Dreams. Stationed there for three months, the actor will be busy filming through the day. Salman has often said that London is his favourite city in the world. So what does Sallu do when he is done with work? “Salman bhai loves being in london. He has a lot of family and friends here, so it almost feels like home to him. He loves going for his daily jog to Hyde Park. So that’s a must,” says a close associate, adding, “Often bhai just takes the tube and travels around the city. He really enjoys being able to do normal things like walking down by the river or taking bus, which he does often in London. Sometimes people realise who he is, but he doesn’t mind that.” In fact when he was filming for Salaam-E-Ishq in London, he told all the crew members where to go and what to see. And now with his wax statue in Madame Tussauds, Salman has yet another reason to be happy in London. But, it definitely looks like with all the pleasure there is going to be some lovin’ too for the superstar. “Katrina is currently filming in the US. She has plans of going to the UK to spend some time with her family. And interestingly, Salman will be in London at that time. So there will definitely be some bonding with Kat!” says the source. REVEALED: THE PLOT OF FASHION

Bhandarkar’s Fashion has been in the news for a number of reasons lately. Now, a source has revealed to us the plot of the film. Our source tell us, “Fashion is the story of a top model, played by Kangana, who loses her position after a wardrobe malfunction. Kangana is disturbed by this incident and her position in the modelling world goes down. Then, a rival model, played by Priyanka Chopra, steps into her position. She goes on to occupy the top slot in the modelling world. The catfights in the modelling world have also been highlighted in the film. Mugdha will be an aspiring model who is Priyanka’s close friend.” Kangana Ranaut recently shot the wardrobe malfunction scene for Fashion. The scene is based on Carol Gracias' wardrobe malfunction episode at the Lakme Fashion Week, 2006. The controversial scene, which had Kangana’s top falling off, has been cut by director Madhur Bhandarkar in order to avoid any sort of controversy. There are also reports of a steamy scene between Arjan Bajwa and Priyanka Chopra, which has not gone down well with the censor board. The movie is slated to release this November. October 2008

FROM being a bubbly actress to completely settling into the role of a wife and a mother, Kajol seems to have come full circle. Always away from the spotlight now, she says she finds giving interviews highly boring. Thankfully, she still likes print interviews because she can "wear her chappals, not do any make up and wear just about anything!" So, while doing just that, the effervescent actress opens up about family life and working with her husband Ajay Devgan.  You seem to have changed a lot from your early

days in the film industry. Has marriage contributed to your transformation? Well, I think I've just grown as a person. Life happened. Experiences teach you so much in life. I think some of that credit also goes to Ajay and that's the great thing about marriage. Your good habits rub off on each other and yes, it has helped me a lot. And I hope Ajay has taken some of the good stuff from me too!

I HAVE GROWN AS A PERSON

 How do you embrace motherhood

and family life? I think we all look at life very differently till we become parents. Before I became a mum I had my own way of looking at things and people. I used to judge everything and everyone. But now with Nysa, everything is changing. I now see things with a new perspective—with her perspective—without any baggage. I think that is one of the best things to have happened to me.

 How was it working with Ajay as your director on U, Me Aur Hum?

You know, I knew he would be good because I know direction is something has wanted to do since he was 7 or 8 years old. But that he would be this good! I am pleasantly surprised…he has so much clarity, such vision that it was great. He really knew how he wanted each scene…what he expected from each of his crew members. It was a refreshing change.

 Is he then the best director that you have worked with?

Well, definitely one of the best. I think with his newness, he brings a lot of freshness with him. I wouldn't compare him to others because he isn't like any other director. That, I think, is the mark of a great director. The mark of a genius is that he or she is nothing like anyone else.

 But when you work with your husband, who then as a director becomes

your boss, is it difficult to manage that? There isn't any button that we switch on or off. And, not just with your husband, it's the same with your friend or sibling. Yes, you definitely have a comfort zone but you also maintain a level of professionalism. In Ajay's case, we have worked together for so long that, whether on set or off, we are the same. We don't think that we have to behave in a certain way… it just happens. October 2008
