2009 SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament

South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith, South Carolina defender Blakely Mattern, LSU midfielder Malorie Rutledge, Florida defender Lauren Hyde and Georgia defender Laura Eddy headline the 2009 Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Awards announced Tuesday. Smith was named SEC Coach of the Year while Mattern earned SEC ScholarAthlete of the Year honors. Rutledge and Hyde were named SEC Offensive Player of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year, respectively with both earning First Team All-SEC honors. Eddy garnered SEC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-SEC honors. It is the first SEC Coach of the Year honor for Smith, who guided South Carolina to school records for conference (seven) and overall (15) victories this season. The Gamecocks recorded a program-best second place finish in the SEC East and came within one game of winning the overall title. Mattern was tabbed SEC Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Simpsonville, S.C., native owns a 3.985 grade point average in International Business and is a three-time first team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection. A finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, she earned first team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2008. Rutledge becomes the fourth player in league history to win SEC Player of the Year honors twice after also winning the award last season. The Sharpsburg, Ga., native led the conference with 19 points in league matches. She posted an SEC-best nine assists to go with five goals in conference play. Hyde was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year after leading a Gator defense that rated as one of the stingiest in the league. Florida shutout more than half (six of 11 games) of its league opponents and tied for the SEC lead by allowing just eight goals (0.73 goals per game) in conference play. Eddy becomes the third Georgia player to earn SEC Freshman of the Year honors in the last four years, joining teammates Carrie Patterson (2006) and Kelli Corless (2007). Eddy was the only freshman to receive All-SEC honors, earning a spot on the second team as a defender.

The 2009 SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament will be held November 4, 6 and 8 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala. Media representatives wishing to cover this event should contact the SEC Media Relations Office.

SEC WOMEN‘S SOCCER

SEC TOURNAMENT

The Road To ORANGE BEACH

The 2009 Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament returns to the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala. It will be seventh time that the facility has served as the host of the SEC Tournament, having hosted each event since the 2003 season. The format of the tournament is a single-elimination tournament of the top eight teams in the Conference based on winning percentage of Conference games (regardless of division). The tournament shall be played in a Wednesday-FridaySunday format with Thursday and Saturday designated as days off (practice days). The winner of the seven-game tournament receives the SEC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. The 2009 SEC Tournament will be the 17th in league history and the seventh in Orange Beach. The first 10 SEC Tournaments were played at campus sites with Vanderbilt serving as the inaugural host in 1993. The tournament returned to Nashville in 1999. It has also been played at Fayetteville (1994), Auburn (1995), Lexington (1996), Gainesville (1997), Tuscaloosa (1998), Athens (2000), Baton Rouge (2001) and Oxford (2002). Florida leads the league with eight SEC Tournament titles. Tennessee is second with four while Kentucky and Vanderbilt each have two championships. Points System: A win counts as three points, a tie as one and a loss as zero points. If a game is canceled, neither team will receive a point and the standings will be determined by average points per game. The two teams in each division with the highest number of points will be the divisional champions. Tie Breaker Procedure: The tournament will be seeded 1-8 regardless of division based on the point system implemented to determine regular season standings (win counts as three points, a tie as one and a loss as zero points). If teams are tied, the following procedure, in the following order, will be used to break the tie: 1. Head-to-head competition; 2. Goal differential in all conference games; 3. Goals scored in all conference games; and 4. Coin flip or draw.
