SCOTTISH ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH It’s that time of year again. As the summer draws to a close, and we prepare ourselves for the dark nights ahead, at least we have Scottish Archaeology Month (SAM) to enjoy and the continuation into Highland Archaeology Fortnight means that there are six weeks of free and exciting archaeological events on offer. SAM makes me think about how fortunate we are to live in (or visit) Scotland with its wealth of archaeological sites and the opportunity that European Heritage Days allows for us to explore our heritage through Scottish Archaeology Month and Doors Open Days. Of course, this would not be possible without the involvement of local volunteers who devise, lead and promote local walks, talks and visits and the participation of public and private sector as well in support of these events. Our thanks to all as ever. Archaeology Scotland’s (note the new name!) involvement in the co-ordination of SAM is made possible through a grant from Historic Scotland. As one of the leading national archaeological charities in Scotland, what we lack in terms of having our own historic sites to visit, we make up for by initiatives such as SAM, our annual Summer School, the Scottish Archaeology Fair, our conferences and projects such as Adopt a Monument. If you are not already a member, there is information on how to join in this guide. If you are a member, thank you for your support. I hope this guide inspires you to find out more about Scottish Archaeology and that you enjoy this year’s SAM.

EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS From August to November, the 49 countries signatory to the European Cultural Convention will be celebrating the European Heritage Days (EHD), a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. Once a year for the past 16 years, the EHD have provided an opportunity to celebrate the unity and diversity of a shared cultural heritage which is Europe’s most distinctive feature. The annual programme offers opportunities to visit buildings, monuments and sites, many of which are not normally accessible to the public. It aims to widen access and foster care for architectural and environmental heritage. Scottish Archaeology Month, along with Doors Open Days, form Scotland’s contribution to EHD, bringing over 100,000 visitors to the nation’s rich archaeological and architectural heritage with support from Historic Scotland.

A public archaeology lecture by Dr. Karen Milek, Department of Archaeology, University of Aberdeen. Find out what it would have been like to live in Scotland in the ninth or tenth century AD, when Scandinavians began to settle here. Recent excavations have been shedding new light on the relationships between Vikings, Picts, and Scots, and how the Scottish way of life was transformed forever by these new Nordic neighbours. The talk will be illustrated and will be followed by a chance to ask questions.

Cowal Archaeological & Historical Society and Adopt-a-Monument have teamed up with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) to give the Site a new lease of life. Funding is being sought to pay for a full upgrade of the path network. In the meantime, funding from Historic Scotland has enabled BTCV work parties to assist CAHS in keeping the trail and its many archaeological sites free from vegetation. This combines the fields of nature and heritage conservation and includes a training programme to equip conservation volunteers with new skills in archaeological recognition, survey and interpretation. It is this part of the project which will take place at this event. In addition, an Awards for All grant has been awarded to the group that will pay for new interpretation along the trail. The main adopted site, excavated during the 1960s and 70s by CAHS, contains Neolithic and Iron Age settlement together with the remains of a medieval chapel, some ‘cell’ graves and a surrounding early Christian enclosure. DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY IRONMACANNIE WATER MILL: OPEN DAYS Saturday 27th - Sunday 28th September | Off the A713 (Castle Douglas - Ayr) 5 miles south of Dalry. | NX 667 753 In the quiet lanes near Balmaclellan is a rural water mill which dates back to 1640. The mill had become derelict before being converted to a house. Chris Mason has completed the restoration of the building and the waterwheel. A large part of this task involved repair to the mill pond and the leat. Across the road is the mill pond, a beautiful and peaceful place inhabited by a rich variety of birds and wildlife. TIME DETECTIVES Tuesday 30th September 10.30 - 12.00 & 12.30 - 14.00 Caerlaverock Castle Glencaple Dumfries DG1 4RU | NY 025 656

Scotland’s Rural Past is a nationwide project that works with local communities to research, record and promote the vanishing settlements and landscapes of the rural past in Scotland. This presentation (hosted by the Abertay Historical Society) will focus on recent work at Rochtaughs in Glen Clova, where a combination of archaeological survey and historical research is bringing this hidden community back to life.

Become a time detective and explore the castle with an archaeologist to discover clues that tell us how the castle was built and how it has changed over time. Handle artefacts and find out about life at Caerlaverock through the ages.

Golf is an ancient game and its origin is obscure. The Heritage of Golf Museum shows how the game developed after it arrived in Scotland from Holland between 1400 and 1500 AD. The visitor can see the simple beginnings, the natural materials and the craft and skill of the early clubmakers: some successes and failures in early experiments and the beginnings of the modern game. The museum tells the story from the time when only a few people here in the East of Scotland coaxed their featheries round the rough links to the present day when multitudes of men and women spend vast fortunes on this pastime of beauty and skill. THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF LEITH’S 16TH CENTURY SIEGE DEFENCES Every Sunday in September 14.00 | Leith. Meet at the north end of the Shore (outside Malmaison) EH6 7DB | NT 272 767 An guided walk (2 miles, 1.5 hours)that follows the line of Leith’s 16th century defences. The death of James V in 1543 triggered a period of political instability and military intervention in Scotland. Leith was destroyed twice by an English army before being fortified by French forces in 1548. These defences were not tested until 1560 when an English army besieged the port. The defences were slighted soon afterwards but much survived into the 18th century and their line can still be traced today. The walk will follow the line of the defences and explore recent archaeological evidence for the defences and their impact on the development of Leith.
