INTRODUCTION

The semantic representations of nominal compounds have been studied, either directly or indirectly by linguists & AI researchers. In an early study, Lees developed an impressive taxonomy of the forms. More recently, Levi & Downing have attempted to capture the linguistic regularities evidence by nominal compounding. The essential feature of this form of modification is that the underlying semantic relationship which exists between the two concepts is not explicit. Moreover, a large numbered of relationships might, in principal, exist between the two concepts. The selection of the most appropriate one can depend, in general, on a host of semantic, pragmatic and contextual factors.

Definition of Nominal Compounds

Sometimes noun and a noun equivalent or a noun phrases are joined together in a compact manner in order to express clearly and precisely a person or a Nominal Compound.

The advantage of compounding mostly lies in making a lengthy sentence into a single composite form. Many sentences may be reduced into single word by way of applying this method.

The basic idea behind formation of compounding lies in an intention to abridge the expanded words.
