Tittle:
Possession of firearms in the United States and in Ecuador
Section A – Description Did you know that Americans have more firearms per capita than residents in any other country? (Small Arms Survey, 2007). Since the Second World War and in the development of the Cold War, the United States realized that the trade in firearms was very profitable, causing an increase in the production and distribution of firearms. The minimum age required to carry a firearm in the United States is 18 years, but in some states, it is allowed the possession of these weapons to minors with "parental supervision". Also in states like Virginia, it is common in restaurants to offer discounts of between 10% and 15% to customers for showing a firearm (rcnradio.com, 2018).
Section B – Comparison Even if in both countries, the United States and Ecuador, there is the manufacture and sale of firearms, the requirements to carry them are completely different. Beginning with the United States, where the requirements to carry a weapon vary with each state, however, these must be of the required age and a permit for their purchase and use, in addition to following certain steps to register (soloconestas.com, 2012). In addition, they can be easily purchased through online shopping and sale sites. Meanwhile in Ecuador to be able to legally obtain firearms a series of very specific requirements is necessary, that only someone with police or military training could get (informacionecuador.com, 2019). Also in Ecuador there are not so many ways to buy firearms.
Section C – Reflection
Which aspect of your chosen topic surprised you?
It is very common for an American family to possess at least one firearm, either for protection or for a hobby driven by the feeling of freedom characteristic of the United States.
Why do you think these cultural similarities / differences exist? Because the United States has a very important military record in world history, little by little
the relationship of this country and the firearms became common.
What might a person from the target culture (s) find different about your chosen topic in your culture (s)? I think that a person, in principle, would not find it very different since it is not a common
theme, however, a lover of firearms could think that there is a lack of freedom or that the regulations are very strict
