Rome Part IV Julius came to Rome well into his 50’s triumphant and at the height of his power. Caesar had an extraordinary habit of walking around without bodyguards. One march morning Julius walked into the senate to tell them that he was there to take his power. He was stabbed by over a dozen people, to death. And was dragged to the feet of a statue of Pompey. They convinced themselves that they were standing up for Rome by killing a tyrant dictator. They were so wrong lol. The roman public was enraged and they killed a lot of the senate and were left with a large vacuum of power. Into this vacuum of power steps a man that many had never heard of : Mark Antony. He had been an aid to Julius when Julius was in Gaul. Caesar had suggested that Mark marry his niece Octavia. Octavia had a little brother named Octavian. 61BC-14AD Octavian He grew up and began too look like the spitting image of Julius Caesar. Antony leaves for Egypt and after a while a letter finally comes and announces two things. A marriage and a divorce. Dissing the Caesar family. This is a golden opportunity for Octavian. He takes his sister and nieces and they display them crying and the roman people grew to hate Antony and began to love Octavian. 31BC the forces of Antony and Ceopatra fight the Romans in the battle of Actium. Antony tried to fall on his sword and he missed slowly bleeding to death. Upon his return to Rome Octavian walked into the senate unarmed and said I quit. He said he had a dream to want to be a farmer. The senate new that if Octavian quits rome would go back to civil war. Octavian said that there were three things he needed. He said he needed to be commander I chief of military, get to make laws, and the ability to raise taxes. They then give him everything they asked for. Julius had told them that he was taking that power and they killed him. Octavian pretended he didn’t want power and forced the senate to voluntarily give up his power. They also give him a title they name Octavian Agustus(semi divine , god like) the senate also feels kinda bad about the death of Caesar and change the calendar. Adding the months July and August. From 31BC to 14AD his rule of 45 years, of peace wealth and prosperity.
From lecture Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. Etymology is also very important.
