Role of Bramhacharya in Good Health Bramhacharya or celibacy is the third important support of good health. Its utility in human life has been extensively discussed in our ancient Indian literature. There are only few other subjects which have received such honourable mention in Indian books and scriptures. It has been held that one can master unbelievable physical, mental and spiritual powers by practicing celibacy. Bramhacharya has been basically interpreted as devotion to Almighty, pursuit of knowledge and conservation of ‘Veerya’ (Seminal fluid) by conscious effort. According to Charak it is a virtuous practice which acts as a prevention against diseases and the infirmities associated with old age. Bramhacharya, according to him, promotes happiness and tranquility and makes one energetic, active and zealous. An appeal is made by him to propogate practicing of Bramhacharya in order to increase the level of happiness in world. In ‘Shatpath’ also similar views have been expressed and it has been said that one who practices Bramhacharya rises above the level of sorrows or grief. Actually ‘Bramhacharya’ is a logical process of preventing loss of energy by controlling your mind and body. It creates a solid foundation for life. It is useful not only for Yogis but also for the worldly people who want to enjoy their life as without a healthy body, happy and calm mind no pleasure can be derived. A person who suffers from high fever can not relish even the best sweets and similarly a depressed person does not feel happy even when he is being blessed. Therefore for seekers of sound health, Bramhacharya also is as important as diet and sleep.
