In 1999, the San Juan County Historical Society, in collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management, The Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, and the Colorado Historical Society, stabilized the Old 100 Boardinghouse, a unique structure built on a cliff 3000 feet above the floor of Cunningham Gulch, just north of Silverton, Colorado. Inaccessible except by foot at 12,500 feet, the project used helicopters to take materials to the project site. The Historical Society received grant funding to make a documentary film about this “extreme” preservation project. Presenters William Tookey and Beverly Rich will talk about the partnerships that were formed to complete this project and the effects of historic preservation in a postmining economy.
