How respected are we as a group?

irds of a (Heritage) Feather

When you have three mayors helping you out that’s a pretty good sign you’ve made it.

Mayor Rosemarie Ives (1991-

2007) is a Society founding member and helped us gain our footing when we started in 1999.

Mayor Chris Himes (1980-1983)

joined us a few years later and has

been a go-getter since day one. She was instrumental in contacting current Mayor John Marchione and Parks Director Craig Larsen to resolve a long-standing issue: securing the Old Redmond Schoolhouse auditorium for our Redmond Historical Society Saturday morning meetings. Mayor Marchione (possibly

Redmond’s history is not just about people and places. It’s also

about our natural heritage, and our April speaker will share lots of photos of our feathered friends at Marymoor Park. Michael Hobbs, a board member of the Friends of Marymoor Park, has plenty of experience. “I first birded at Marymoor Park in 1990, and I've been doing a weekly bird survey there since April 1994. That's every Wednesday or Thursday for the past (almost) 14 years, or well over 750 visits. I also

R

edmond’s “Bird Woman”

This Saturday the “bird man” Michael Hobbs is coming to speak at

our meeting, but did you know Redmond once had a “bird woman”? Nina Stephenson and her husband Steve moved into Redmond from Lake Sammamish where they were operating Shamrock Cottage in 1943. The thought of a paying hobby appealed to her. She had a pair of singing canaries, so why not raise canaries? This would keep her busy while Steve was off hunting and fishing. She talked Steve into building an adjoining room to the back of their house especially for raising the birds with space for cages, benches, flying room and 200 birds. Nina acquired a variety of birds. The genuine “Rollers” were guaranteed to sing and the “Silkies” were her rarest. I’m not sure what happened to Nina or her husband, Steve. In the early 1950s Opie and Cleo Hartman, along with their children, Coeta and Larry, moved into the house. The birdhouse was cleaned up and remodeled into Larry’s room. Today the house is no longer standing, but was located across from the 7-11 store on the Redmond–Woodinville Road. Many more stories about Redmond and folks who have lived here can be found in notebooks at our office. See you Saturday. l

Baby Budgets

These clippings from

1925 and 1938 reflect a Redmond of a few hundred people. Street lights and a single marshal took up a big piece of the budget back then. Today’s budget? For 2006 and 2007, it was $526 million serving 40,000 residents. l
