Revelation, a Detailed Comparison Between Wycliffe’s Translation, and King James Translation This comparison will focus on the most important book of the Bible for those living in the time of the end. Wycliffe was one of, if not the first to translate it into the English language, completing it in 1380, and it is of great importance as being perhaps the oldest extant English copy of this book.

The King James

version used is an exact reprint of the original 1611 edition. The scanned in chapter one page of each of these versions can be seen here:

As can be seen, the spellings and even shape of the letters used today are quite different, and they have been modernized for this comparison. Since this book

is so important, it seemed that there might be merit in doing a word-for-word comparison between these two versions. That was done, and the differences noted. The actual number of differences are small, and while the major points are the same, there are several places that give cause to pause and consider the meaning. It is hoped that this will prove of some benefit to those who are deeply interested in what God’s Word has to say regarding the events that will take place leading up to the end of this world’s history. May God’s Word always be read under the leading of the Holy Spirit, and may God’s true children live their lives according the absolute truths it contains. Red marks words that have been added in the King James, and orange marks words that have been deleted from the Wycliffe.

Where different words are

used for obviously the same meaning, such as “senior” in the Wycliffe translation becoming “Elder” in the King James, i usually only marked the change in the first instance. Please remember that the King James used here is an exact reprint of the original 1611 edition, so will not exactly match the KJV Bible readily available today. Revelation chapter 1

Churches.

Here is a subjective list of things that seem to me to be quite different: 1:10 Many people use “Lord’s day” to try and make a case for Sunday worship. In the Wycliffe translation it is “a sondaye”. Usually Wycliffe translates “sun” as “sunne”, so this is quite interesting.

Whatever, there is still no command to

worship on Sunday, and not even clear wording that John believed Sunday was a special day. 6:8 “vermin”, not “beasts” implies pestilence carried about by rats etc. 7:2 “region of the sun”, not the “East”.

7:3 “I”, not “we”. 7:14 “have made their garments large”, not “washed robes”. 9:16 200,000 horsemen, not 200,000,000. 11:2 “court which is within”, not “without”. This is the exact opposite. Much has been written on the court “without”, but is it really the court “within”? 12:6 1026, not 1260. 13:12 “And he did all that the first beast could do in his presence”, not “And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him”. This seems to be a big difference, but i can’t exactly understand it. 14:11 “print”, not “mark”. This is stronger wording lending support to the view that the mark of the beast will be a literal mark, or print, in the forehead or hand. 14:19 “Cut down the grapes of the vineyard”, not “gathered the grapes of the vine”. This too seems to be a big difference, but i can’t understand it fully. 15:4 “gentiles”, not “nations”. 17:3 Added “having seven heads”. 17:10 “they are also”, not “there are”. This is a big difference, as it shows the 7 heads in verse 9 are one and the same as the kings referred to in verse 10. With the KJV translation, it looks like the 7 kings are different from the 7 heads. 17:12 “as yet” added.

Do the kings actually receive a kingdom or not?

Wycliffe is not clear, but the KJV is sure they do. Also, “at” is not in the KJV, so many studies have been written showing that one hour equals 15 days in prophetic time etc. etc. But if “at” is in fact correct, it just means that they receive power at the same time with the beast. 17:17 “her kingdom”, not “their kingdom”.

“Her” could refer to the woman

riding the beast, while “their” would refer to the kings’ kingdoms. 18:14 “had in price”, not “goodly”. 22:11 “more righteous”, not “righteous still”. I pray that this comparison has been of benefit, as there are always gems of truth awaiting the careful miner of God’s Word. Any questions or comments are welcomed.
