RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE G8 Summit Declaration Response Statement from InterAction, U.S.‐based alliance of 183 international nongovernmental organizations focused on the world’s poor and most vulnerable people L’Aquila, Italy (July 8, 2009)—A major breakthrough has been achieved with the publication of an annex, the G8 Preliminary Accountability Report. Samuel A. Worthington, InterAction President & CEO stated, “For the first time the G8 has outlined its individual financial commitments and disbursements in four areas: food security, water, health, and education. Although there are other commitments not analyzed in the report, this is clearly a major step forward in holding the G8 countries accountable to their annual commitments. We look forward to an expansion of the report to other areas of G8 commitments.” In addition, the G8 has established a senior level working group on accountability. The group will “share best practices for accountability and develop … a comprehensive and consistent methodological approach for a G8 Accountability Framework, with a particular attention to results…” The report is to be delivered at the 2010 Summit in Muskoka Canada. Worthington continued, “We’ve urged the United States for several years to increase the G8’s accountability to the public and other groups monitoring G8 decisions such as civil society organizations around the globe. And we see this as a significant advance in this area. I look forward to working with the senior staff group in the development of the accountability framework.” ### Visit www.interaction.org to read more about the G8, InterAction and its member organizations.
