Saida Dahir Paul Cushing College Forum 19 March 2019 Fundraising, reserving rights, designing, editing, and publish a podcast. Since the moment I knew what I journalist was, I knew that was what I wanted to be. This has never wavered my whole life. When teachers or strangers I met ask me the inevitable question “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, without a moment of hesitation, I would reply “Journalist!” This freaked some people out because I was so determined to be a journalist when other kids my age were saying astronaut one day and vet another. As a child, my mother told me I loved to talk. I could drag on a conversation about anything and everything for hours. At the fresh age of seven, I started watching the evening news. At first, my mother was hesitant. She didn't’ want her innocent young girl to be bombarded with terror and bad news. While my classmates were watching Disney channels specials, I ended each night with an episode of Anderson Cooper 360. I just knew that one day, in the future, I would have a median to express myself too. For my senior project, I knew I wanted to do something that involved my childhood dreams of having a platform to express myself. I decided I would start a podcast. It wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Along the way, I asked myself, “how can I fundraise, reserve rights, design, edit, and publish an on-air broadcast to eventually start my own podcast?”

The first step to this process was finding inexpensive equipment and fundraising. To help me find the best products for podcast I turned to my friend the internet. I could find everything podcast at the blog The Podcast Host. Matthew McLean a contributor to the podcast recommends his favorite microphone in his article reviewing the Samson Q2U micorphone, “It’s simplicity, versatility, and accessories make for an amazing value. I do find myself recommending this microphone quite a lot these days, and will often use one for recording podcasts too,’ he says. McLean also suggests a pop filter and handlebar in the set. The estimated price for all these products according to McLean was less than $100.

After finding all the products I wanted to purchase in order to have a successful podcast I started fundraising. I learned more about how to fundraise. One article that helped me a lot was, 7 Essential Tips for an Effective Fundraising Strategy by Peter Gasca for Entrepreneur. Gasca says, “Get creative. Like negotiating business deals, there are numerous ways you can engage donors without simply asking for a check. For instance, you can ask donors to pledge their support with smaller amounts spread out over a period of time. Another strategy is asking a donor to create a “matching gift,” meaning that your organization needs to raise matching funds in a given amount of time to receive the gift. This signals to the donor that you are serious about raising more money and also creates urgency for new donors.” I took Gasca’s advice and With my fundrasier, I contacted family members, companies, and friends over time with my project proposal and asked them to donate to my cause. After a few short days, I raised all the money I needed and bought my equipment. After successfully purchasing the equipment, the next step was media and cover photos. I teamed up with Mr. Ramsey to do a photoshoot for the thumbnail of the album.

From there I got in contact with a professional graphic design editor who edited the photo and placed a logo and title on it.

Following fundraising and desinging the cover for the podcast I started my internship at KRCL Radio Radioactive. There I learned the ins and out of the broadcasting world. I learned how to upload to the cloud, edit files, make scripts, and interview guest. It was everything I needed to learn to have a successful podcast. I spent every Tuesday night in the studio with Billy Palmer and Lara Jones. It was an incredible opportunity and I gained so much insight and knowledge.

The last step to my senior project was actually sititng down and writing and recording the introduction to my podcast. Introduction Script: Hello, my name is Saida Dahir and I’m a 18-year-old student at Academy for Math, Engineering, and Science. Welcome to my podcast. The Walking Stereotype… A symbol of who I am, of what I’ve overcome, and what I want to continue to overcome. I am starting this podcast so I have a platform for me to express my self. To talk about things that deeply affect me, issues that are very personal and things that I want to change about the world

This is all to say. The Walking Stereotype… A metaphor for my existence in this peculiar place we call home. As a Black, Muslim, Refugee, Women I have been placed in many boxes that limit the possibilities of me finding inner peace. This blog will be a safe space for anyone approaching the void of self-destruction and pity. You are valid. Welcome to the journey of finding yourself. Your inner walking stereotype. I recorded it and uploaded it to the cloud. https://thewalkingstereotypeblog.com/. That concludes my senior project. It was an incredible opportunity to take something I wanted to do and run wiht it. Instead of making excuses and procrastination I got it done. I made an impact. I am very proud of that.
