Biol&260 1 Infectious Disease Essay
Infectious Disease Essay Team Effort The infectious disease essay teaches to all four of the global outcomes. The class will divide into groups of 2-3 students. Choose a topic and share the research effort and discussion of topic. The oral presentation is a group presentation. Each team will have 20 minutes to present the topic to the class and will be assigned a single grade for its collaborative effort.
Writing Essay Using a Collaborative Tool The essay will be written as a Wiki. It is a collaborative tool that allows you to keep your collaboration on a server and access it anytime from anywhere. Wikis are compatible with MS Word. You can upload or down load files to MS Word. You will receive invitations to join the class Wiki page. I will open a page with the name of your topic and invite you to share on the document. From then on you can collaborate on the document at will. I can monitor your progress and your contribution. When your assignment is completed, you will turn in your wiki URL in the drop box. To invite you, I need a valid email account for you. If you have questions or problems, let me know as soon as possible. The collaborative tool allows me to make sure that this is indeed a collaborative piece of work. Balance workload and responsibilities.
Essay (85% of grade) Write a concise summary report (3-4 pages maximum, single space) on an infectious disease of your choice. Do not choose ambiguous infectious diseases such as cancer where the overwhelming majority of the cases are not caused by an infectious agent. Confirm your choice of disease with me by email ([email protected]). I will acknowledge your email promptly. The report should include the following sections: - Background or introduction o History of disease - Etiology: biology of the pathogen that causes the disease - Epidemiology: population at risk, environmental reservoir, mode of transmission, geographical distribution - Pathology o Symptoms and signs o Diagnosis o Prognosis and treatment o Prevention - Conclusion - References
Oral Presentation (15% of grade) Prepare a short class presentation on your topic. The format of the presentation is your choice: Power point, Word, white board and index cards.

References You must give at least 4-5 professional references. Professional references are publications in the field and are peer reviewed. Electronic references must come from a reputable, welldocumented website which is managed by a recognized authority in the field. Look for the HON seal, accreditation from the Health On the Net foundation (Health on the Net). The internet is a wonderful resource if used carefully. Infectious diseases are a very sensitive, controversial subject. Do not quote from the politically motivated, openly biased, obscurantist or far-fetched sites. Many reputable organizations host excellent websites: National Institute of Health, Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization. The Seattle Times is not a professional reference in science, and neither is the New York Times. Scientific American, Science, Nature, and nursing journals are professional publications. Biology textbooks such as Brooker, Campbell and Reese, Tortora et al., Nester et al., etc… count as professional references. Use Wikipedia at your own risk. Because Wikipedia is an open resource and it is not peer reviewed, I will not accept it as a reference; however if you use a Wikipedia article, check the references at the end of the article. Primary references from Wikipedia provided that they meet the criteria for professional references are acceptable. All the links must be current and reference professional work.
