WHO ARE THE TEACHERS? Phyllis Bass teaches our Twos classes. She has been involved with EPCP since 1982 when both her sons attended the Preschool. Phyllis served on the board as Co-president and PCPO Representative. She began teaching here in 1988. Phyllis’ education includes two years of Liberal Arts courses with an emphasis in Psychology, at Wayne State University and Michigan State University. Phyllis’ education is supplemented with early childhood education workshops at LCC and U of O. She is a member of NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children). Shawna White teaches our Threes class. She has 10 years of experience in parent participation preschools (cooperatives), and she is a member of the NAEYC. Shawna started her teaching career as a parent at United Methodist Co-op Nursery School in Burlingame, CA with her first son in 1997. Shawna served on the parent board of directors as the Council Representative to the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools. She went back to college in order to begin subbing in the Threes class, and then was a teacher's aide for a year. Shortly thereafter, she became the Three's teacher for several years. In addition to teaching the Threes class three times a week, she also taught the Toddler class twice a week.

Mary Walker teaches our Fours class. Both her daughter and son attended EPCP. Mary served in a number of different board positions while a parent of EPCP. Mary graduated from the University of Oregon with degrees in History and Education. Her professional history has included business management, special event planning and volunteer coordination. Mary is very active at the elementary schools her children now attend. EPCP teachers are members of the Oregon Association for the Education of Young Children (OAEYC) and continue their education by attending workshops and conferences through OAEYC, Parent-Child Preschools of Oregon (PCPO) and EC Cares (Early Childhood Coordination Agency for Referrals, Evaluations and Services in Lane County). Our teachers offer a unique perspective on our preschool since they have experienced the cooperative environment from both the teacher and parent aspect.

OUR MISSION The primary mission of Eugene’s Parent-Child Preschool is to encourage a lifelong love of learning by providing the best possible social and educational experience for children and their families within a caring community of its members. Regular and active parental participation in the preschool ensures that an atmosphere of love and caring surrounds our children’s growth and learning. Organizationally, the Preschool relies on the talents of its teachers and members for basic direction, fundraising, and special projects. The co-op offers parent education opportunities as well as mutual support from other parents.

OUR PROGRAM We offer a high quality social and learning experience for preschool children, and we are proud to offer a developmental, diversity-rich program. Our program centers on the individual child and strives to enhance positive self-esteem. We promote the concept that play and the freedom to explore provide the preschool child with the opportunity to develop emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. Learning and growth take place through selfdiscovery, self-directed, and sensory activities. Our teachers help each child learn self- discipline and responsibility for himself/herself, as well as essential communication skills. A safe and nurturing, and stimulating environment is provided to allow the children to discover their own unique qualities and those of others.

As parents, we share in the daily operation of the preschool, as well as participate in fundraising and decision-making. Parents assist the teachers in the classroom. Attendance at general meetings during the school year is also required. Limited participation slots are available for a higher monthly tuition. Please call for more details.

WHAT ABOUT FUNDRAISING? Each spring the Preschool parents present a children’s play and shadow puppet theater production for the community. Each co-op member is required to help with this production. All proceeds go directly back to the preschool, helping to maintain low tuition.
