REGIONAL RURAL BANKS
Introduction • In 1975, a Working Group on Rural Banks was appointed by the Central Govt ot India under the chairmanship of M Narsimham.
• To review the flow of institutional credit to weaker section of the rural population. •
• Govt of India decided to setup regional rural banks all over the country under the 20-Point Economic Programme announced by Mrs. Indira Gandhi on 1st July, 1975. • • There were 196 RRB’s operating in 26 states across 523 districts with net work 14,484 branches
Functions of RRB’s • To provide cheap credit & other facilities to small & marginal farmers, landless agricultural labourers, artisans and small entrepreneurs engaged in productive activities
• To develop the rural economy of the country by liberal financial assistance to agriculture, trade & commerce, industries & other
• To inculcate banking habit among the people and mobilize their saving for accentuating the economic growth of the rural areas • • To provide employment to educated youths of the rural areas
• To bring down the cost of rural banking
