South East Qld & Drought WHAT IS DROUGHT? • •

A drought is a natural and common feature of Australia’s climate which cannot be avoided or prevented A range of factors contribute to the length and severity of a drought including but not limited to: rainfall; evaporation; water wastage; burning of fossil fuels; clearing of forests; and climate changes resulting from global warming and El Niño The impact of all these factors is causing annual and seasonal climate changes and affecting the pattern of rainfall, temperatures and evaporation rates

HOW CAN WE GET THROUGH THE DROUGHT •

Watch everyday water consumption and remember that every little bit we do as individuals or businesses contributes to saving water

Little changes make a big difference to our regional water supply. Your local council is well resourced to help you find ways to save water and conserve this precious natural resource

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS TODAY? •

If it rains in your local area, it doesn’t mean that rain has fallen in the catchment areas that flow into the dams. The catchment area needs at least 60mm of rain before any water will flow into the dams

HOW SERIOUS IS QUEENSLAND’S DROUGHT? •

South East Queensland is currently in a prolonged record five-year dry period. Water in the Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine Dams are at historic low levels at just above 40 per cent (May 2005) The current storage capacities of Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine Dams are sufficient to supply the region. However, the recent lack of rainfall has placed pressure on the availability of water from these dams

HOW HAVE WE PLANNED FOR FUTURE WATER SUPPLIES? •

Effective management of South East Queensland’s precious natural water resources is critical which is why SEQWater and 13 local councils have developed a Regional Drought Strategy

The Regional Drought Strategy includes three stages of implementation. These include incentives to reduce demand, identify alternative water sources, conducting research and ongoing planning and communication
