Reflection Paper on Patch Adams Lary Lou E. Ventura Grade 12 - ABM

Passion and Devotion--two things which drive a person to continue on and to move forward despite lots of obstacles and sufferings. The passion to help and be of help, the passion to love and to receive love, the passion to pursue dreams, and the devotion to keep pursuing it. The whole movie revolved around a man naming Patch Adams, from the title itself. Patch Adams was a suicidal person. He admitted himself at a mental hospital. And that’s where everything started--his passion and who he wants to be. Being admitted at a mental hospital, he encountered lots of patient who helped him realize what is his purpose in life. And it was the night with the patient with schizophrenia where he thought that it is not always about the medicines and other stuff that can heal the patient. He thought that enlightening one’s spirit can make someone be healed--spirit over the body. Then he decided to take up medicine and become a doctor. He stumbled upon a woman, named Carin, whom he fell in love with. Later on, they became lovers. And they both shared the dream of creating a free hospital, a hospital where the patients will have a lot of fun. And the both of them, together with their friends, created a clinic and started treating people even without their medical certificate. Tragedy came, and Carin was murdered. Because of this, Patch wanted to take his life again, but he was reminded of their dreams that is why he continued to pursue it once more. This movie is something worth reflecting upon. Every one have their own opinions and perception regarding the movie Patch Adams, but I like to see it this way--a movie about hope. Patch Adams went through lots of hardships, suffering depression, always seen as trouble by the dean of medicine and the hospital doctor,

and losing someone he loved. He is an admirable guy, who did not give up trying to show others his beliefs about how laughter and joy can heal a person. He did not budge to the words of those who despise him. The movie shows us that we should all try to be like Patch, someone full of hope, someone who had been on the floor many times but still continues to stand up, someone whose dreams are not just a mere dream, but a dream of giving people dreams. And if we want to pursue our aspirations in life, we must struggle for it. Sitting lazily and praying for your dream to happen is not the solution. It is our efforts that make our dreams to reality. Being someone who is obsessed with our passion is not a really bad thing, rather, it is something to admire. Is it not admiring to see someone who is focused on what he or she truly wishes and that you know that he or she dwell many efforts on that thing he or she focuses on, efforts that is done with good and by good. And that goes my reflection on the movie. Let us all be a person of work than talk. And in that work we do, comes an equivalent passion, devotion, and hope.
