Key Terms 

Ratio= A mathematical way of comparing two quantities.  Example: 9 out of 10 dentists prefer toothpaste XYZ.



Rate= Compares two quantities with different units that cannot be converted into a common unit.  Example: 1 Dollar per 10 Peso.



Proportion= a statement that two ratios are equal.  Example: 1 dollar = 2 dollars 10 Pesos 20 Pesos

Three ways to write a ratio 1. 2. 3.

9 out of 10 students 9:10 9 (fraction form) 10

Possible Traps 

Be sure to write your ratio in the SAME ORDER it is written. 



Example: 3 out of 4 children should be written as 3:4 NOT 4:3.

Be sure to simplify IF POSSIBLE. 

Example: 10:20 should be reduced to 1:2

Figure out what your rates are. Line up the units. Cross multiply number to number, NOT number to letter. Divide by the unused number.
