Ratios and Proportions p.785 By Robert C. Gonzalez CE Instructor, San Antonio College
Key Terms
Ratio= A mathematical way of comparing two quantities. Example: 9 out of 10 dentists prefer toothpaste XYZ.
Rate= Compares two quantities with different units that cannot be converted into a common unit. Example: 1 Dollar per 10 Peso.
Proportion= a statement that two ratios are equal. Example: 1 dollar = 2 dollars 10 Pesos 20 Pesos
Three ways to write a ratio 1. 2. 3.
9 out of 10 students 9:10 9 (fraction form) 10
Possible Traps
Be sure to write your ratio in the SAME ORDER it is written.
Example: 3 out of 4 children should be written as 3:4 NOT 4:3.
Be sure to simplify IF POSSIBLE.
Example: 10:20 should be reduced to 1:2
Steps 1. 2. 3.
4.
Figure out what your rates are. Line up the units. Cross multiply number to number, NOT number to letter. Divide by the unused number.
