Introduction of Raag Assa In Gurmat Sangeet, ‘Assa’ is a very important Raag. In the land of Punjab, the melodious music of Raag ‘Assa’ is heard by everyone. Every morning, the Sun’s golden rays enter Earth with the beautiful tune of this Raag. And in the evening, when the golden Sun goes and hide in the laps of nature, then “Balhari Kudrat Wasia” praise of God is sung in the melodious musical notes of this Raag. Its Sub Raags given in SGGS are Assa-Kafi and Assavari, both of which have many features in common with Assa. In Ancient or Mid-Century scriptures, there is no mention of Raag Assa. Baba Farid Ji and Guru Nanak Sahib Ji made a large contribution by giving this Raag a spiritual and classical form. Assa is a very old Raag, once popular in the Punjab but seldom heard in concerts today. It is known as a twilight melody with a calm mystical mood. Assa was used by Guru Nanak sahib ji, Guru Angad Sahib ji, Guru Amar Das ji, Guru Ram Das ji, Guru Arjan Sahib ji and Guru Tegh Bahadur ji. Assa raag literally means the melody of hope. As the Gurus emphasized the singing of God’s praises before dawn, this Raag is conducive to ‘Kirtan’ before day-break. The morning- prayer of the Sikhs. The Assa-di-var is sung in this Raag. Guru Ramdas’s Chhants set the tone of this blissful composition:
Aroh: Sa, Re Ma, Pa, Dha SaN Avroh: SaN Na Ni Dha Pa, Ma, Ga Re SA Re, Ga SA Vadi- Samvadi: Ma-Sa Sur- Ga, Ni are not used in ascending, rest all are ‘Shudh’ Thaat- Bilawal Jaati- Aurhav –Sampuran Time- Sunrise and sunset Vadi-Samvadi- Ma-Sa Mukh-Ang- Re Ma, Pa, Dha SaN, Ni Dha Pa Ma, Ga Re Ga Sa
