(a) Why is sterilization of water necessary? Discuss any two methods of sterilisation. (b) 0.5 g of CaCO3 was dissolved in dil. HCl and diluted to 1000 mL. 50 mL of this solution required 48 mL of EDTA solution for titration. 50 mL of hard water sample required 15 mL of EDTA solution for titration. 50 mL of same water sample on boiling, filtering etc., required 10 mL of EDTA solution. Calculate the different kinds of hardness in ppm. [9+7] 2. (a) Water having following composition to be softened by lime soda process Ca(HCO3 )2 = 220 ppm, Mg(HCO3 )2 = 56ppm, MgCl2 = 130ppm, MgSO4 = 84ppm, CaSO4 =98ppm, Calculate the amount of lime and soda required to soften 106 litres of water. (b) Explain scale formation and sludge formation in boilers. What are their disadvantages? How are they removed? [8+8] 3. (a) Give suitable reasons: i.
