Qualitative Changes in Equilibrium Systems Friday, November 14, 2008 1:42 PM
Jeff: Today was pretty much a work period so you didn't miss much, but help yourself to my notes if you want them.
In 1884, Henry Louis Le Châtelier (1850-1936) made observations of chemical systems at equilibrium, his studies developed what is now known as… -
Le Châtelier's Principle
When a chemical system is disturbed by a change in a property, the system adjusts in a way that opposes the change.
To apply Le Châtelier's Principle, you start with an initial equilibrium, then a 'non-equilibrium' shifting state, followed by a new equilibrium. One application was Fritz Haber using Le Châtelier's Principle to create an economic process for the production of ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen. Le Châtelier's Principle and Concentration Changes If more reactant is added to a system at equilibrium, it will undergo an equilibrium shift
