Lesson for 5th Sunday in August. 1. No money – Vaughn J. Featherstone, Ensign May 1976 – I bear my humble witness to you that the great God of heaven will open the doors and means in a way we never would have supposed to help all those who truly want to get their year's supply. The Lord will make it possible, if we make a firm commitment,..... All we have to do is to decide, commit to do it, and then keep the commitment. Miracles will take place; the way will be opened, we will have our storage areas filleld. We will prove through our actions our willingness to follow our beloved Prophet and the Brethren, which will bring security to us and our families. We live in the richest society in the history of the word, and sometimes money can be a problem yes,.....most of the time is is just simply a matter of priorities! Everything seems to be more important that our food storage...........it is a matter of priority and a matter of life!!! 2. The church will provide for me if a disaster strikes – All the church storehouses and welfare farms across Canada and the United States would only feed about 4% of the members of the church. They are not storing for times of famine, the church welfare program counts on you as members to have your own supply and have been asking for 150 + years. Brigham Young – My warfare is, and has been for years, to get the people to understand that if they do not take care of themselves they will not be taken care of; that if we do not lay the foundation to feed and clothe and shelter ourselves we shall perish with hunger and with cold; we might also suffer in the summer season from the direct rays of the sun upon our naked and unprotected bodies. Ezra Taft Benson – Our Bishops storehouses are not intended to stock enough commodities to care for all the members of the Church. Storehouses are only established to care for the poor and the needy. For this reason, members of the Church have been instructed to personally store a year's supply of food, clothing, and, where possible fuel. By following this counsel, most members will be prepared and able to share with others as may be needed. James E. Faust – The Church cannot be expected to provide for every one of its millions of members in case of public or personal disaster. It is therefore necessary that each home and family do what they can do to assume the responsibility for their own hour of need. Ezra Taft Benson – We must do more to get our people prepared for the difficult days we face in the future. Our major concern should be their spiritual preparation so they will respond with faith and not fear. “If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear.” Our next concern should be for their temporal preparation. When the economies of nations fail, when famine and other disasters prevent

people from buying food in stores, the Saints must be prepared to handle these emergencies. This is a matter of concern for area, region and stake councils. Russell M. Nelson, 1986 – An important part of the Lord's storehouse is maintained as a year's supply, stored, where possible, in the homes of faithful families of the church. Thomas S. Monson – 1986 – As has been said so often, the best storehouse system that the Church could devise would be for every family to store a year's supply of food, clothing, and where possible, the other necessities of life. It is our sacred duty to care for our families, including our extended families. Ezra Taft Benson – The strength of the Church Welfare Program lies in every family following inspired direction of the Church leaders to be selfsustaining through adequate preparation. God intends for his Saints to so prepare themselves “that the Church may stand independent above all other creatures beneath the celestial world.” 3. My neighbor has enough to share – No they don't!!! They likely don't have any food either! The latest statistics state that 85% of the members don't have much storage at all. If you are planning to eat someone else's storage, this is a bad plan. As a parent, where do you think your children will go when tumultous, latter day scenes begin to unfold? Will you, and they, be prepared to meet their essential life sustaining needs? Will you have helped them prepare to care for themselves, or will you be as empty handed as they may well be? If you smugly believe that it can't happen to you, you may be in the company of a great many who will yet live to regret having entertained such an irrational belief. Quote from Neal Leash “Prophetic Quotes....” 4. I have no space – I can't find the quote but I will keep looking and pass it along when I find where I read it. I think it was David O Mckay and he said that if we could see what he sees, we would put our food storage in a pile in the middle of the room and walk around it. We wouldn't be without it. 5. Don't know how or where to start – that is why I am here to help you, or there are many others who are willing to help, Please feel free to get in touch with me because I am more than willing to come into your homes and help your family set up a plan, tell you how to do it, and work with you on whatever levels you may be at. I am will just to come and talk and answer any questions you have, or have a wealth of information available to me that I can pass along to you.

6. Nothing is going to happen while I am alive – Gordon B. Hinckley – 1992 – The kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of God on the earth will be combined together at Christ's coming – and that time is not far distant. How I wish we could get the vision of this work, the genius of it, and realize the nearness of that great event. I am sure it would have a sobering effect upon us if we realized what is before us. Bruce R. McConkie – 1979 – I stand before the Church this day and raise the warning voice. It is a prophetic voice, for I shall say only what the apostles and the prophets have spoken concerning our day.....It is a voice calling upon the Lord's people to prepare for the troubles and desolations which are about to be poured upon the world without measure. For the moment, we live in a day of peace and prosperity but it shall not ever be thus. Great trials lie ahead. All of the sorrows and perils of the past are but a foretaste of what is yet to be. And we must prepare ourselves temporally and spiritually. Boyd K. Packer – 2005 – If 9/11 was a wake-up call, then the earthquake and tsunami in Southeast Asia, was a kick out of bed. We need to pay attention to the signs of the times. George Q. Cannon – The Lord works in the midst of this people by natural means, and the greatest events that have been spoken of by the holy Prophets will come along so naturally as the conseequence of certain causes that unless our eyes are enlightened by the Spirit of God and the spirit of revelation rests upon us, we will fail to see that these are the events predicted by the Holy Prophets..... They will come along in so natural a manner, the Lord will bring them to pass in such a way that they will not be accepted by the people, except by those who can comprehend the truth, as the fulfillment of the predictions of the Prophets. It requires the Spirit of God to enable men and women to understand the things of God; it requires the Spirit of God to enable the people to comprehend the work of God and to perceive His movements and providences among the children of men. The man who is destitute of the Spirit of God cannot comprehend the work of God. Ezra Taft Benson – When the economies of nations fail, when famine and other disasters prevent people from buying food in stores, the Saints must be prepared to handle these emergencies. Bruce R. McConkie – 1979 – Peace has been taken from the earth, the angels of destruction have begun their work, and their swords shall not be sheathed until the Prince of Peace comes to destroy the wicked and usher in the great Millennium. There will be earthquakes and floods and famines. The waves of the sea shall heave themselves beyond their bounds, the clouds shall withhold their rain, and the crops of the earth shall wither and die. There will be plagues and pestilence and disease and death. And

overflowing scourge shall cover the earth and a desolating sickness shall sweep the land. Flies shall take hold of the inhabitants of the earth, and maggots shall come in upon them. Bands of Gadianton robbers will infest every nation, immorality and murder and crime will increase, and it will seem as though every man's hand is against his brother. 7. I am waiting for the prophet to tell me over the pulpit – Remember Noah warned his people for over 150 years and none of them listened.... then what happened? We have been warned for well over 150 years also, how many of us have listened, and then what is going to happen? Harold B. Lee, Welfare Meeting, October Conference, 1966 “For years we have been counseled to have on hand a year’s supply of food. Yet there are some today who would not start storing until the Church comes out with a detailed monthly home storage program. Now suppose that never happens? We still cannot say we have not been told. Should the Lord decide at this time to cleanse the Church…a famine in this land of one year’s duration could wipe out a large percentage of slothful members, including some ward and stake officers. Yet we cannot say we have not been warned.” Spencer W. Kimball – 1976 – We encourage families to have on hand this year's supply and we say it over and over and over, and repeat over and over the scripture of the Lord where He says, “Why call ye me, Lord, and do not as I say?” We also hope that you are maintaining your year's supply of food, clothing, and where possible, some fuel and cash savings. L. Tom Perry October 1995 Conference – I believe it is time, and perhaps with some urgency, to review the counsel we have received in dealing with our personal and family preparedness....We have been instructed to follow at least four requirements in preparing for that which is to come. Gain an adeequate education, live within your income, avoid unnecessary debt, store a reserve of food and supplies....As long as I can remember, we have been taught to prepare for the future and to obtain a year supply of necessities. I would guess that the years of plenty have almost universally caused us to set aside this counsel. I believe that the time to disregard this counsel is over. With events in the world today, it must be considered with all seriousness. Gordon B. Hinckley October Conference 1998 – And there shall arise after them seven years of famine.....And god will shortly bring it to pass. Now brethren, I want to make it very clear that I am not prophesying, that I

am not predicting years of famine in the future. But, I am suggesting that the time has come to get our houses in order....There is a portent of stormy weather ahead to which we had better give heed....We are carrying a message of self-reliance throughout the Church....I urge you brethren to look to the condition of your finances.....May the Lord bless you, my beloved brethren, to set your houses in order....That's all I have to say about it, but I wish to say it with all the emphasis of which I am capable. Summary of counsel given by whom and when:

1856 – Brigham Young – 3 – 5 years storage 1857 – Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball – 7 years storage 1864 – Brigham Young – 7 years storage 1867 – George Albert Smith – 7 years storage 1868 – Brigham Young 1891 – George Q. Cannon 1893 – George Q. Cannon – 1 – 2 years storage 1916 – Elder Charles Nibly – 1 year 1936 – David O. McKay 1942 – First Presidency – 1 year 1954 – Bishop Buehner – 1 year 1958 – New Era – Counsel regarding Food storage 1959 – new Era – wheat 300 lbs, pwd milk 100 lbs, sugar 100 lbs, salt 5 lbs, water, vitamins 365 1966 – Harold B. Lee – Think in terms of what would keep us alive 1973 - Ezra Taft Benson 1973 – First Presidency 1973 – Ezra Taft Benson 1976 – Spencer W. Kimball 1977 – Bishop Jack West 1978 – Boyd K. Packer 1980 – Ezra Taft Benson 1982 – Elder Busche 1988 – First Presidency 1995 – L. Tom Perry Much more in so many of the conference and ensign article even in the Sept 2009 Ensign!! It doesn change and it doesn't stop.

8. It's only just me so I don't need to prepare that much – I can just buy it at the store Spencer W. Kimball – 1974 - The little gardens and a few trees are very valuable. I remember when the sisters used to say, “well, but we could buy it at the store a lot cheaper than we could put it up.” but that isn't quite the answer, is it, Sister Spafford? Because there will become a time when there isn't a store.well if you don't do it, then who will take care of you? When things get tough, there is only you to count on. Tell about my mom. 9. My parents stored this stuff for years and nothing ever happened, and they never used it....... Spencer W. Kimball – Do we lose faith, do we lose patience, do we lose hope, do we get weary in waiting, because the day is long and the event delayed? It is difficult to be prepared for an event so long delayed. Many have found it too difficult and they slumber without due preparation. Hundreds of thousands of us today are in this positions. Confidence has been dulled and patience worn thin. It is so hard to wait and be prepared always. But we cannot allow ourselves to slumber. James E. Faust – Some have said, “We have followed this counsel in the past and have never had need to use our year's supply, so we have difficulty keeping this in mind as a major priority.” Perhaps following this counsel could be the reason why they have not needed to use their reserve. Thomas S. Monson – 1986 – Recent surveys of the Church members have shown a serious erosion in the number of families who have a year's supply of life's necessities. Most members plan to do it. Too few have begun. Henry B. Eyring – 2008 – Another fallacy is to believe that the choice to accept or not accept the counsel of the prophets is no more than deciding whether to accept good advice and gain its benefits or to stay where we are. But the choice not to take prophetic counsel changes the very ground upon which we stand. That ground becomes more dangerous. The failure to take prophetic counsel lessens our power to take inspired counsel in the future. The best time to have decided to help Noah build the ark was the first time he asked. Each time he asked after that, each failure to respond would have lessened sensitivity to the Spirit. And so each time his request would have seemed more foolish, until the rain came. And then it was too late. 10. There are no signs of the times and the second coming is many years away Bruce R.

And overflowing scourge shall cover the earth and a desolating sickness shall sweep the land. Flies shall take hold of the inhabitants of the earth, and maggots shall come in upon them. Bands of Gadianton robbers will infest every nation, immorality and murder and crime will increase, and it will seem as though every man's hand is against his brother. Wilford Woodruff – They will come down like the judgements of sodom and Gomorrah. And none but the priesthood will be safe from their fury. God has held the angels of destruction for many years, lest they should reap down the wheat with the tares. But I want to tell you now, that those angels have left the portals of heaven, and they stand over this people and this nation now, and are hovering over the earth waiting to pour out the judgements. And from this very day they shall be poured out. Calamities and troubles are increasing in the earth, and there is a meaning to these things. Remember this, and reflect upon these matters. If you do your duty, and I do my duty, we'll have protection, and shall pass throught the afflictions in peace and safety. (Three months later he said) – What is the matter with the world today? What has created this change that we see coming over the world? Why these terrible earthquakes, tornados, and judgements? What is the meaning of all these mighty events that are taking place? The meaning is, these angels that have been held for many years in the temple of our God have got their liberty to go out and commence their mission and their work in the earth, and they are here today in the earth. October 8, 1984 Millenial Star Thomas S. Monson – 2002 – Noah heeded God's command to build an ark .... that they might be saved from the floodwaters. Yet there was no evidence of rain and flood. His actions were considered irrational. The sun was shining and life moved forward as usual. But time ran out. The floods came, the disobedient were drowned. When God speaks and we obey, we will always be right. Spencer W. Kimball – The foolish virgins were not averse to buying oil. They knew they should have oil. They merely procrastinated, not knowing when the bridegroom would come. The day of the marriage feast approaches. The coming of the Lord is nigh. And there are many among us who are not ready for the great and glorious event. George Q. Cannon – The Lord works in the midst of this people by natural means, and the greatest events that have been spoken of by the holy Prophets will come along so naturally as the conseequence of certain causes that unless our eyes are enlightened by the Spirit of God and the spirit of

revelation rests upon us, we will fail to see that these are the events predicted by the Holy Prophets..... They will come along in so natural a manner, the Lord will bring them to pass in such a way that they will not be accepted by the people, except by those who can comprehend the truth, as the fulfillment of the predictions of the Prophets. How I wish we could get the vision of this work, the genius of it, and realize the nearness of that great event. I am sure it would have a sobering effect upon us if we realized what is before us. Ensign November 1988 – conference issue – Ezra Taft Benson – I testify that it is time for every man to set in order his own house both temporally and spiritually.....I testify that not many years hence the earth will be cleansed. Jesus the Christ will come again, this time to vanquish His foes and to rule and reighn on the earth. Ensign November 2001 – Gordon B. Hinckley – The Times in Which we Live L. Tom Perry November 1995 – If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear Ensign November 1980 Ezra Taft Benson – Prepare for the Days of Tribulation Ensign October 2007 – Visiting teaching message: Become an Instrument in the Hands of God by Preparing for the Second Coming of Our Lord Ensign May 2003 Robert D. Hales – Faith through Tribulation Brings Peace and Joy Ensign May 2007 Bishop McMullin – Lay up in Store Ensign January 1974 – Ezra Taft Benson: Prepare Ye Ensign May 2004 – Dallin H. Oaks: Preparation for the Second Coming Church History Gospel Doctrine Teachers Manual: Looking forth for the Great Day of the Lord to Come – The Second Coming is Near, D&C 34:7, 12; 43:17; 110:16 Teachings of the Presidents Joseph F. Smith :Preparing for the Second Coming of Christ Teachings of the Presidents Wilford Woodruff: Preparing for the Second Coming of Christ Ensign August 2007: Are you prepared? Ensign 1987 November: To the Fathers in Israel

2007 – All is safely gathered in references to plagues and pestilences from the scriptures D&C 84:96 – 97 D&C 5:19 D&C 45:31-32 D&C 87:6 D&C 43:25 D&C 97:25-26 D&C 29:18-19 Recap about the 1918 Pandemic of Spanish Influenza – it killed more people than WW1 and all the wars of the 20th century combined – approximately 50,000,000 died – it was the most devastating ever on record – 1/5 of the population in the world was infected – it was the most deadly for ages 20 – 40 – it was a mutated Avian Flu Virus – there are 144 strains of this virus already – H5N1 is only one strain The Bubonic Plague was in 1347 – 1351 and was called the black death What are some of the concerns we are dealing with? Bird Flu, Swine Flu, Pneumonic Plague – similar to bubonic or Black death, Bio/Chemical warfare, the most current issue is the Swine Flu and its possible mutations – watching it closely as it comes back to its second wave – there is a very deadly bacterial pnuemonia/staff infection in the States right now that, as it stands, kills more people in a year than the common flu. Some are concerned that if something like this or the Avian Flu mixes up with something like the Swine Flu, it could be very deadly. Search and study out personal revelation and free agency. Personal Revelation D&C 11:12-13 D&C 45:56-59 Henry B. Eyring – As the challenges around us increase, we must commit to do more to qualify for the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Casual prayer won't be enough Reading a few verses of the scripture won't be enough Doing the minimum of what the Lord asks of us won't be enough

What can we do? Watch for the signs of His Coming, Stand in Holy Places Elder Orson Pratt - With a work of such magnitude before them, the Latter-day Saints should be wide awake, and should not have their minds engaged in those fooleries in which many indulge at the present time. We should put these things away and our inquiry should be, -- “Lord how can we prepare the way before thy coming? How can we prepare ourselves to perform the great work which must be performed in this greatest of dispensations, the dispensation of the fullness of times? How can we prepare ourselves to perform the great work which must be performed in this greatest of dispensations, the dispensation of the fullness of times? How can we be prepared to behold the Saints who lived on the earth in former dispensations, and take them by the hand and fall upon their necks and they fall upon ours, and we embrace each other? How can we be prepared for this?” How can all things that are in Christ Jesus, both which are in heaven and on the earth, be assembled in one grand assembly, without we are wide awake?
