What is this?
Why use a quiet time journal?
This journal that you are holding in your hands is a quiet time journal. This journal is a place for you to write down what’s been happening in your life spiritually and what you’re learning about God. This journal will also help you get into the habit of consistent quiet times. And it is the goal of this quiet time journal to help you get closer to God than you’ve ever been before!
Many Christians struggle with quiet times for two reasons – 1) they don’t know how to have quiet times and 2) they don’t get the encouragement needed from other Christians to keep consistent with their quiet times. Quiet time journals attempt eliminate both of these reasons by providing the needed guidance and the opportunity for encouragement. Quiet time journals provide guidance by directing you in prayer and Bible reading. They also provide a written record of your relationship with God, so that you can look back at what you’ve learned and how you’ve grown. Then you can share how you’ve grown with other believers and receive encouragement.
What is a quiet time? A quiet time is time that you set apart on a consistent basis to be alone with God, so that you can get to know Him better through the Bible and prayer. It is where you take time out of your busy day to sit down to pray and read the Bible. Quiet times are one of the primary ways that we as Christians deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ!
Why should you have a quiet time? We live in a world that screams for our attention - TV, friends, music, family issues, sports, work, movies, etc. – and it’s so easy for us to overlook our relationship with Jesus. But it is so crucial for every Christian to consistently set apart time where they get to know Jesus and deepen their relationship with Him through the Bible and prayer. Our relationship with Jesus Christ should be the most important priority in our life. Jesus needs to be at the center of all our decisions, thoughts, actions, words, ideas, etc. You cannot be in a right relationship with God if you don’t spend time with Him. Quiet times enable you to set apart time to focus solely on God and learn from Him. When you spend time with God, you will: • Love Him more and become more like Him • Receive direction for every decision you need to make in life • Have the strength needed to carry you through any problem One final reason that you should get into the habit of consistent quiet times, is because Jesus had quiet times. The Gospels of Mark and Luke inform us that Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray (Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16). If Jesus needed to spend time with God, how much more do we need to spend time with God?
Use this journal as a tool, not as a taskmaster. Don’t feel guilty if you don’t write in it for a period of time, or you don’t follow through with everything exactly like you wanted. Filling out all of these pages does not make you a strong Christian; this journal simply provides a framework to help you develop a relationship with Jesus. So use this journal in a way that benefits your relationship with God.
How to have a quiet time? “I’ve never had a quiet time before and I’m not quite sure what to do.” “I’ve never read the Bible before.” “Some days I just don’t want to pray.” “It’s just one more thing I have to add to my busy day.” “I’ve tried quiet times before and I just can’t do it.” Do any of these comments sound like thoughts running through your head right now? We’ve all been in your shoes at some time – no one was born a Christian and we all struggle from time to time with our relationship with Jesus. So whether you’re new to the idea of quiet times or if you just need a boost in your walk with God, we’re going to provide you with some practical steps to help you develop a life-changing quiet time. The following steps will help guide you through a typical quiet time. The dark boxes provide examples of how to use the different fill-in sheets contained in this journal. May God bless you and draw you into a close relationship with Him as you develop the habit of consistent quiet times!
First things first (things to do before your first quiet time) Here are some great ideas that will help you get started on the right track with your quiet times. First, it’s important for you to find a time each day that works for you and try to consistently have your quiet times during that block of time that you set apart. For some this will be when you first wake up, for others it will be when you go to bed – find a time that works best for you and do your best to stick to it. This will help keep you consistent and will help you stay accountable. Secondly, find a place that you can focus on God. This may be your bedroom, your living room, or the library. It just needs to be a place where you can focus solely on God. Third, gather needed resources. You will need a Bible, a journal, and a pen. You may also find it helpful to have a dictionary near by for any words you don’t know. Fourth, begin each quiet time with the right attitude. Keep in mind that this is a time to focus on God, to be honest with God, and a willingness to act on what God shows you.
Steps to an effective quiet time Step 1: Fill out the Spiritual Growth Check Up Sheet This is an opportunity for you to look at and evaluate your spiritual life – where you’re doing well and where you’re struggling. There are some questions at the top of the page for you to answer that will help guide you as you write. At the bottom of the page is a place to write down things you will do to help you become a stronger Christian. It’s important for us to periodically look at our spiritual lives and see how we’re doing. So every time you get a new quiet time journal make sure to fill out the Spiritual Growth Check Up Sheet. As you fill out the rest of this journal pray daily for what you wrote down on this sheet.
Step 2: Take time to read the Bible & write in your journal. Feel free to read whatever you want in the Bible, but for many, following a Bible reading plan helps guide them and keep them focused as they read the Bible. You will find a Bible Reading Plan in the appendix of this journal. There are four columns to choose from in this Bible reading plan. You may choose to read all four columns every day (which would lead you through the entire Bible in one year); or you may choose a combination of the columns. Each column will lead you through a different section of the Bible in one year (Column #1 will lead you through the life of Christ,
Column #2 will lead you through the New Testament letters, Column #3 will lead you through the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament, and Column #4 will lead you through the Old Testament minus the Wisdom Literature.). If you’ve never read the Bible before begin with just Column #2. Feel free to choose any of the columns. To reduce the frustration of falling behind, there are 25 readings each month, giving you some days to catch up, to not read at all, or to go back and review sections of Scripture that you didn’t understand or sections that really spoke to you personally. Feel free to begin reading any day of the year. After you read your Bible passage for the day, take some time to write about what you read and what God is speaking to you on the Quiet Time Sheet. There are some questions at the top of the page that will help you write down insights and applications from your reading that day. Don’t rush through this step, take time and evaluate the Bible verses you read and what they mean for your life and write down what you discover.
Quiet Time Sheet Spiritual Growth Check Up I haven’t been as focused on prayer as I would like to be. I find my Bible reading is very consistent and beneficial, but I find myself slacking in prayer
My Next Step is… 1. For a month I will pray for 20 minutes a day. 1.
Date: 10/05/07
Bible Verses Read: Matthew 7:1-14 If I want others to treat me nice and respectful, I need to treat people with respect. Matthew 7:12 tells me that others will treat me like I treat them. This is a command for me to obey and a promise for me to claim. I will treat others like I want to be treated and God will bless my life.
Step 3: Take time to memorize the Bible. Choose a Bible verse that you would like to memorize. Then write it down on your Quiet Time Sheet. Continue writing it down with the Bible reference every time you have a quiet time until you have it fully memorized. If you need help picking verses, turn to the appendix of this journal. There you will find several memory verses. Choose one that speaks to you, cut it out, carry it with you throughout the day, and periodically pull it out to review it. After you’ve memorized a verse, pick another verse to memorize. Memory Verse Reference: Philippians 4:13 Bible Memory Verse I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Step 4: Take time to pray. On your Quiet Time Sheet there is a section for your prayers. Use the P.R.A.Y. acronym as a guide when you pray. The P.R.A.Y. acronym is explained at the top of the Quiet Time Sheets. As you pray, take time to write down some of the things you are praying for. During the ASK portion of your prayers refer to your Prayer Request Sheet in the appendix of this journal. The Prayer Request Sheet is a place to write down things you would like to pray for on a regular basis. This may be personal prayer requests or requests for other people (family, friends, community members, etc.). Whenever you have a new prayer request add it to your Prayer Request Sheet. Whenever you add a request write down the date you began praying for that request, what the prayer request is, and how God answered it.
P.R.A.Y. What can you PRAISE and THANK God for today? God’s love & grace, Jesus’ death on the cross, and my family
P.R.A.Y. What sins do you need to REPENT of (“say you’re sorry for”) today and RECEIVE God’s forgiveness for? My attitude lately, my lack of commitment to God
What prayer requests (physical, emotional, spiritual, etc.) should you ASK God to answer in your life and the lives of others and BELIEVE that God will answer? Jon & Emily - marriage, Lewis – faith, Grandma
What areas of your life (friendships, attitudes, family relationships, faith, etc.) do you need to YIELD (“give”) to God and as you LISTEN for His voice concerning these issues, what is He saying to you today? My attitude, my lack of faith
Prayer Request Sheet Date

What do I do when I run out of space in this journal? Take some time to look back over your journal pages and remember what God has done and is still going to do in your life. Give yourself a round of applause because you’re growing as a Christian! Then pick up another journal and begin filling out another one.
Things to watch out for At some point in your Christian life, you will find it hard to be consistent with your quiet times. We all struggle with consistency from time to time. If you are seeking the Lord, Satan will always be right there trying to keep your quiet times inconsistent and ineffective. Listed below are three common pitfalls we all face when it comes to quiet times. Also listed are warning signs and practical suggestions to help you overcome these three difficulties.
Spiritual Growth Check Up In what ways have you felt close to God most recently? In what ways have you felt distant from God most recently? What has been happening recently in your life? Has Jesus been the top priority in your life recently? Explain.
Distractions – This is when you have trouble focusing during your quiet times. • Symptoms: wandering mind, lack of focus, unable to recall what you read or prayed for. • Remedy: pray for focus, find a quiet place, expect distractions and make a plan to overcome them, follow a quiet time plan (for example, a quiet time journal), and write out your thoughts and/or prayers in a journal.

Dryness – This is when you feel like you’re in a rut and you’re not getting anything out of your quiet times. • Symptoms: bored, avoiding your quiet time, putting it off till the end of the day, lack of spiritual insight. • Remedy: pray for deliverance from your dryness, change things up (i.e. read somewhere else in the Bible, pray about different things, go to a new location for your quiet time, take a day to just thank God, etc.), don’t rush your quiet times, share insights with others and ask them for input.

Diligence – This is when you find it hard to remain consistent with your quiet times. • Symptoms: guilt, inconsistency in your quiet times, forgetting to have a quiet time, avoidance. • Remedy: commit to God that you will consistently have quiet times, schedule your quiet time at a time each day where you can focus on God.
My Next Step is… What are some things that you can specifically do to make sure that you’re growing closer to Jesus during the next month or so? 1. ___________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ 2. ___________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Matthew 22:37
Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
James 1:22
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.
1 Corinthians 11:29
2 Corinthians 5:21
1 John 1:9
Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.
For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
The LORD says, "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”
1 John 2:6
Romans 10:9
Psalm 32:8
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders, make the most of every opportunity.
Philippians 4:13
Colossians 4:5
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
1 Timothy 4:12
Romans 8:28
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
He is so rich in kindness that he purchased our freedom through the blood of his Son, and our sins are forgiven.
