Queen Victoria 1819 -19 01 Victoria was the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837, and the first Empress of India from 1876. Her reign lasted 63 years and 7 months, longer than that of any other British monarch. In general, the period during her reign is known as the Victorian era. This era was a period of significant social, economic and technological progress called also the Industrial Revolution. Victoria's reign was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire /India, Cape Colony in Africa, control of the Nile valley in Africa, South Africa/. She had 9 children, 8 of them married members of European royal families, and the other, Princess Louise, was married to the future Governor-General of Canada. That´s why, she is called "the grandmother of Europe". The Victoria Memorial is situated in front of Buckingham Palace in London. She made also a big revolution in wedding clothes, she was the 1st one to wear white dress as a bride. When her husband, Albert, died in Windsor castle, Victoria was devastated and she entered a state of mourning and wore black for the remainder of her life.
