Quarter 1: Reflection In this quarter 1, I have enjoyed many things in class, especially creating pastiche because it helped me to improve my creative skill and be able to express how do you feel at that moment. I also have enjoyed the Modernism and Imagism because it helps me to be able to identify the thing that is abstract or not. Modernism is focused to substitute abstractions with concrete details that could be further described upon through the use of figuration. Imagism is emphasized simplicity, clarity of expression, and precision through the use of exacting visual pictures. I see it very challenging because, in the poem, there is regulation to create a pastiche to be the same as William Carlos Williams's poem. Furthermore, speaking English in class also challenge most of the students in class because I’m not the first language in English which in the class, I usually forget to speak English and speak Thai as it’s familiar. I also find myself challenging because I am a golfer and I usually miss lots of schools. During the project time, I go to play golf which it decreases the time of doing the work in class and I am very tired beyond the others as I need to play golf all day and doing the project at night. I think this part is not fair for me as Ms. Laurin can extend the date for me to submit later than other. I hope Ms. Laurin will help me and extend the date for students like me. I am very proud of my group project work that I worked with Johnny, Ichi, Sea, and Jaguar. I expressed the theme and natural disaster in the poster as a class about Spring Storm poem. We also need to annotate the poem and list all the possible literary devices in the Spring Storm. Moreover, I really enjoyed the class that students walk around as a group to do the group analysis in the classroom. It is very fun and students get to work in a group to improve their teamwork skill. I’m more deeply interested in the new books that Ms. Lauren has assigned us to check out from the library. It’s called “Things Fall apart” by Chinua Achebe. This novel is set in Nigeria and used to be very popular during the 19th century. two area that I believe I made a big progress in Pastiche, Analysis in TIQA and Unit 1: Project. I got not a pretty good and not bad too for the first TIQA on Complaint. At that time, I didn’t give lots of detail and write a clear thesis for both theme and tone. I was lack of detail which made me get to deduct points so, on the third TIQA on Nantucket poem, I got a better score and be able to gain full mark which I add more detail and improve a lot on my thesis. I expressed my tone and theme in more detail not just putting one adjective that describes the poem, but I also add more description to my theme and tone. It made me feel proud of myself to be able to boost my own writing skill and my grade. For the pastiche, the first pastiche that I created is lacked creativity and word choice to represent the meaning in the pastiche because I don’t have lots of information and word choice to express my poem in a more sophisticated way. But although I’m not good at writing a pastiche, I still get a full mark in every Pastiche work that Ms. Laurin assigned. I was off task by one of my pastiche that I focus too much on human and abstract which it’s not similar to William Carlos Williams’s poem because he focuses more on the natural and concrete image. One last thing about my Unit 1: Project, I was very happy after doing this work because it made me feel relax. I got 91/100 which I was very satisfied with my score. One of the specific areas that I need to improve is when I write a reflect back to my mentor, it is not consistent to the way that it should be and when I rehearse some of the original poems, I presented in a way too simplistic which pull down my score into the underdeveloped part. In the next quarter, I hope I could have done better grade on my project and in every work I will try my best to gain the highest possible marks. No one will not succeed if he or she doesn’t understand the word “Difficulty.”
