Quarter 2: Reflection In this quarter 2, I have enjoyed many things in class, especially doing the Lit Circle because it helped me to improve my speaking skill and improve my leadership to guide people or finding something to argue with the group, so the time for our group can reach the minimum that Ms.Laurin’s requirement. I also have enjoyed Things Fall Apart that Ms. Laurin assigns us to read as a class because it helps me to improve my reading skill and I like the conflict between white men and Nigerian tribes in the book. Things Fall Apart is focused on the battle between the white men whose invade the tribe’s area. The main character is Okonkwo. He is the protagonist of the book which he is anti-feminist. He is always rage to his wife. This book seems very challenging because it’s very confusing at the beginning of the story and the words that they use are complicated to follow along with the story and hard to follow along with the story. Furthermore, speaking English in class is still challenging for most of the students in class because students in our school are not the first language in English which in the class for me, I sometimes forget to speak English and speak Thai which deduct class participation. In this quarter, Ms. Laurin changes the style of giving out student participation. She will set a period for one week for each method. The first one is paying 10 baht to Ms. Laurin each time that students speak in Thai which Ms. Laurin is not happy with this solution. She changes to group participation which in my opinion is the most successful method to convince students to speak English, but Ms. Laurin is not happy with this method. The last solution is class participation which I think it’s a disaster for my grade because many students in the class usually forget to speak English and accidentally talk Thai. It decreases my grade lots. Last week of the first semester, I was at 90%, but on the last day of school, many people speak Thai which came down to 5 out of 10 for the class participation. My grade dropped from 90% (A) to 89% (B+). I was sad to the score and beg Ms. Laurin to increase one percent of my grade to an A, but Ms. Laurin can’t give any extra points to improve my grade. So, I need to accept the truth that I got B+ for this quarter. Secondly, an area that I believe I made big progress in Lit Circle, I am not pretty good at convincing people to speak and maintain people’s conversation to meet the time limit that Ms.Laurin has set. In the first quarter, I got a low mark on a lit circle because, in my group, we didn’t have a conversation or discussion in the group. We answer the question and give out the information that we have found from research which causes us to get a low mark as we have less discussion. In the second quarter, we have improved our lit circle to make it longer and add several questions to make sure that we discuss in the group. Our teamwork has been enhanced which in each particular roles, they have helped each other to make our lit circle have a discussion and be the most efficient lit circle. We also tried to find the benefit and moral of reading Things Fall Apart. One last thing about my Unit 2: Project, I was not appreciated after doing this work because the score was not high enough. I got 80/100 which I was a little bit disappointed. One of the specific areas that I need to improve is I need to be more concerned with my essay because I got deducted by 5% as I made the wrong style of the book’s title. But, I have improved in using good evidence to support my idea in the project. I improve in the analysis part that I explain how does gender inequality affect the character in Things Fall Apart. The last thing that I do well is I improve in giving a lot of details in my essay which it relates to the purpose of writing each essay. In the next quarter, I hope I will try to be more precise, so I will not lose my grade too easy.
