PURPOSE: This is a brief statement of why you are doing the activity, what you hope to learn, or what you are investigating. It is sometimes a question. Hypothesis/Prediction. Written in an if-then statement Independant, Dependant Variables and Controls. Write a short paragraph outlining your variables in the lab. MATERIALS: List all materials needed for the experiment to be conducted, unless it is a demonstration. PROCEDURE SUMMARY: State how you will achieve your purpose. Write the procedure you followed during this lab. Make sure to use enough detail about your materials and methods that someone else could repeat your procedure. DATA and OBSERVATIONS: This is the section of your report that contains data, measurements, or other observations you make during the activity. Whenever possible, organize data into a table or chart that is easily read. Sketches and measurements help to clearly communicate observations to your reader. INTERPRETATIONS/QUESTIONS: Answer any question about your data & observations in a complete sentence that incorporates the question. SUMMARY OR CONCLUSION: Pull it all together here in a paragraph. Consider the following when writing your conclusion: • • • • • •
Restate your purpose. A brief overview of what you did in the experiment. What were your observations? How do you explain your observations? Make inferences! (Questions may guide you) Did you achieve your purpose? List any possible experimental errors and how you could change the lab to prevent them in the future.
