PUNJAB-the land of five rivers

HISTORY • The word "Punjab" is a combination of the Sanskrit words panj Five, and āb Water, giving the literal meaning of the "Land of Five Rivers". The five rivers after which Punjab is named are the Beas, Jhelum, Chenab,

Agriculture- the mainstay of economy • •

97 per cent of the total cultivable area is under the plough. The main crops grown are wheat, rice and cotton

• Priority is being given to sugarcane, oil seeds, horticulture and forestry. • recorded highest yield per hectare of wheat, rice, cotton and bajra. • Per capita availability of milk of 845 gms per day was highest amongst all other states of the Indian union.

Industry • moving up in production of engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, leather goods, food products, textiles, electronic goods, sugar, machine tools, hand tools, agricultural implements, sports goods, paper and paper packaging.

• 0.2 million small scale units in the state with an investment of Rs. 45090 million, employing 0.9 million persons • 70 per cent of India’s total production of bicycles and parts, sewing machines, hosiery and sports goods is "Made in Punjab"

Infrastructure • The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) infrastructure index gives Punjab a rating of 191 – highest in the country. • Quality power without power cuts is available at cheaper rates • All 12,484 villages in Punjab have been electrified since 1974. • 2,478 branches of scheduled commercial banks in Punjab.

Economy • The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is Rs.84851.44 crores. • The Per Capita Income has been estimated at Rs. 30701(R) in 200405. • Structural composition of the State’s economy –shift from primary to tertiary sector. • The overall budgetary position had improved on revenue account.
