Shrinking Mimsy’s Pumpkin Hat Gauge= 4 stitches per inch on size 8- 16” circular needle Needs: 2 to 4 oz worsted weight yarn, color orange;

scrap of worsted weight yarn, color

brown; 1 oz sock weight yarn, color leaf green; size 8 needles – set of 5 double points; and one 16” circular;

2- size 2 or 3 double points; yarn needle.

Cast on 70 stitches on a size 8 circular needle for a child size hat, or 80 stitches for an adult hat. Place marker at beginning of round. Pattern:

Knit 9, purl 1 around

Continue until hat measures 4 ½ inches for child, 6 inches for adult, of curled edge.

Begin decreases.

All decreases will occur between the purl furrows, to keep the pumpkin shaping intact: Decrease row 1: SSK, knit to last 2 stitches before purl furrow, K2tog, repeat around Decrease rows 2 & 3: Knit

Repeat these rows twice. After the first decrease there will be 7 stitches between purl furrows. Following the second repeat, there will be 5 stitches between furrows. size 8 double points as necessary.

Change to

Repeat decrease rows 1 & 2 twice. After the third decrease round there will be 3 stitches between furrows; after the fourth there will be 1 stitch between furrows.

Break off orange yarn, leaving a 5 inch tail. With brown yarn, knit plain for 1 inch. Cast off. Vine and Leaf:

With leaf green yarn and two size 2 or 3 double points, work six inches of 3 stitch I-cord.

[Cast on 3, slide stitches to opposite end of needle, pull yarn tight and knit stitches. Slide work to opposite end of needle (do not turn) knit the stitches, continue.] Leaf Body:

R2 – (and all wrong side rows) purl back, purling into the back of YOs R3 – K2, YO, K1, YO, K2 (7 st) R5 – K3, YO, K1 YO, K3 (9 st)

R7 – K2, YO, K2, YO, K1 YO, K2, YO, K2 (13st)

R9 – K3, YO, K3, YO, K1 YO, K3, YO, K3 (17 st) R11 – K4, YO, K4, YO, K1 YO, K4, YO, K4 (21st)

R13 – K5, YO, K5, YO, K1 YO, K5, YO, K5 (25 st) R15 – K6, YO, K6, YO, K1 YO, K6, YO, K6 (29 st) st

Right Leaf Lobe: knit on 1 7 stitches of leaf body

R1 – K1, K2tog, YO, K1 YO, K2tog, K1 turn (7 st) R3 – Repeat row 1

Row 5 – K2tog, K3, K2tog turn (5 st) Row 7 – K2tog, K1, K2tog turn (3 st)

Row 9 – K3tog, cut 5” tail, pull through loop Center Leaf Lobe: Knit on 15 center stitches of leaf body R1- K5, K2tog, YO, K1 YO, K2tog, K5 turn (15 st)

R3 – K2, K2tog, K2tog, YO, K1 YO, K2tog, K2tog, K3 (13 st) R5 – K1, K2tog, K2tog, K2tog, YO, K1 YO, K2tog, K2tog, K2tog, K1 (11 st) R7 – K2tog, K2tog, K2tog, YO, K1 YO, K2tog, K2tog, K2tog (9 st) R9 – K2tog, K2tog, YO, K1 YO, K2tog, K2tog (7 st) R11 – K2tog, YO, K1 YO, K2tog (5 st) R13 – K2tog, K1, K2tog (3 st)

R15 – K3tog, cut 5” tail, pull through loop

Left Leaf Lobe: Repeat as for Right Leaf Lobe Using tail ends, tack leaf to hat.

Tack vine to hat in a manner that pleases you. Add a

second I-cord vine if desired. Weave in all remaining ends:
