PULSE IS BACK! Taking the initiative, creating opportunities, making the difference… This is what PULSE is all about. True, we did start late but better late than never. True, publishing PULSE once a month is not that much of a change, but it is an incremental step in the right direction. We have embarked on a promising journey, one that shall fulfill our ambitions and set the standards for our professional life. Medicine is a vocation, so lets respond! Sometimes, facing the mess of courses and exams as students, facing the stress of healthcare as physicians, we forget the essence of the medical profession. Diseases become names on paper… Patients become inanimate objects to manipulate… It is our duty as medical students to create our own oasis, to create an outlet to breath through so as to survive the challenges of medical school. PULSE provides such outlet, it is our free space where one liberates thought, it is our opportunity to get creative.

This might be our last issue for this year, but this is far from being the end, it is merely a pause to recharge our batteries. A fresh start, one with momentum is our promise to you for next year. If God permits, we will be there working from day one as always to enrich our journey in the faculty of medicine. On behalf of MEDCLUB, we wish you all the luck in your final exams, the culmination of which is a successful year. We wish you a busy summer and an enjoyable vacation.

A new Pulse is born and throbbing in our hands. A Pulse of creativity, humor and sharing of information. A Pulse of love, friendship and “belonging”. A pulse of link between the students and their varieties. A Pulse of communication with the “Other”. To the editorial committee : Bravo and ‫ وك‬for the new magazine. Keep on going… God Bless you… Pr. Philippe Chedid Dean of Faculty of Medical Sciences Lebanese University

KAZEM, So That We Never Forget… “Shabeb Sabaya” this is the way he addressed the class every time… Once he was amongst us… radiant, busy… Cherished in the memory of friends… Kazem the doctor to be, Kazem the message… A sublime message to all, a message that heals, humbles… This is as far as sacrifice can go… A sacrifice for his country, for his village Aynatha… A sacrifice under that olive tree, on that holy soil… One might diaspprove of the war he fought, or oppose his political views, but surely one had to admire his honesty, integrity and sense of leadership… Kazem, not merely a picture we hang on our wall… Kazem, a living memory carved in the crevasses of our conscience… Kazem, so that we never forget… H.Bitar

“Transsexualism” A REAL TABOO!!! A transsexual is a person who believes that his or her body does not reflect his or her true 'inner' identification of physical sex or gender, and so change their physical sex in an effort to be on the outside as they feel they are on the inside. The main symptom of this condition is a unique type of depression, anxiety or even psychological pain: Gender Dysphoria. If untreated, it can lead to mental and emotional problems, and sometimes suicide. No evident cause has been determined for tanssexualism. Many transsexual people desire various types of medical alterations to their bodies. These physical alterations are collectively referred to as sex reassignment therapy and often include hormone replacement therapy and surgery. In order to receive this therapy, transsexuals should be diagnosed for a psychological disease called “gender idendity

disorder”. Laws regarding changes to the legal status of transsexuals are different from country to country. Many Western societies have procedures whereby an individual can change their name, and sometimes, their legal gender, to reflect their gender identity. In many other countries especially in those where the idea of transsexualism isn’t yet clearly established or even refused, it is still not possible to change birth records or other legal documents relating to ones gender status. In certain countries, transsexuals suffer from poor social integration, infact employment discrimination against them is rampant and many of them are fired. And the debate continues... A.Hamade

"Nchalla"

N an otech nol o gy, w i l l i t get any s m al l e r ? The biological and medical research communities have exploited the unique properties of nanomaterials for various applications . Functionalities can be added to nanomaterials by interfacing them with biological molecules or structures. This t e ch n o l o g y promises to be revolutionary. Diagnostics Biological tests m easuring t he presence or activity of selected substances become quicker, m o re sensitive and more flexible when certain nanoscale particles are put to work as tags or labels. Magnetic nanoparticles, bound to a suitable antibody, are used to label specific molecules, structures or microorganisms. Gold nanoparticles tagged with short segments of DNA can be used for detection of genetic sequence in a sample.

Drug delivery The overall drug consumption and sideeffects can be lowered significantly by depositing the active agent in the morbid region only and in no higher dose than needed. Tissue engineering Nanotechnology can help to reproduce or to repair damaged tissue. This so called “tissue engineering” makes use of artificially stimulated cell proliferation by using suitable nanomaterial-based scaffolds and growth factors. Tissue engineering might replace today’s conventional treatments like organ transplants or artificial implants. On the other hand, tissue engineering is closely related to the ethical debate on human stem cells and its ethical implications. E.Ha

A. Obeid

Did You Know? On average, you speak almost 5,000 words a dayalthough almost 80% of speaking is selftalk (talking to yourself). If all your DNA is stretched out, it would reach to the moon 6,000 times. The easiest way to tell if someone's thought process is primarily right or left brained is to ask them the f o l l o w i n g question face to face. "Do you prefer a good war or a bad peace." If you monitor the way their eyes move take the opposite direction (i.e if they look left, they are right b r a i n e d oriented).

Medical Grammar and Spelling Forget illegible handwriting! Have you ever witnessed the results of what happens when doctors pay little attention to spelling, grammar and interpretation? Here is a list of medical notes written by doctors about certain patients. 1-The baby was delivered, the cord clamped and cut, and handed to the pediatrician, who breathed and cried immediately. 2-She has no rigours or shaking chills, but her husband states she was very hot in bed last night. 3-Patient has chest pain if she lies on her left side for over a year. 4-On the second day the knee was better, and on the third day it disappeared. 5-The patient is tearful and crying constantly. She also appears to be depressed. 6-The patient refused autopsy. 7-The patient has no previous history of suicides. 8-She is numb from her toes down. 9-The skin was moist and dry. 10-Patient had waffles for breakfast and anorexia for lunch.

There are several kinds of doctors, and it is told that they can be differentiated by the following method: -General Practitioners know nothing and do little. -Surgeons know little and do everything. -Internists knows everything and do nothing. -Pathologists know everything and can do everything, but it's usually too late. If it is dry - add moist; if it is moisten - add dryness. Congratulations, now you are a dermatologist. A young woman went to her doctor complaining of pain. "Where are you hurting?" asked the doctor. "You have to help me, I hurt all over", said the woman. "What do you mean, all over?" asked the doctor, "be a little more specific." The woman touched her right knee with her index finger and yelled, "Ow, that hurts." Then she touched her left cheek and again yelled, "Ouch! That hurts, too." Then she touched her right earlobe, "Ow, even THAT hurts", she cried. The doctor checked her thoughtfully for a moment and told her his diagnosis, "You have a broken finger."

IDIOT PARENT!

A woman called the hospital because she caught her little daughter eating ants. The doctor quickly reassured her that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her daughter into the hospital. She calmed down, and at the end of the conversation happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant poison to eat in order to kill the ants!

A women told her physician: my son ate the keys of our house, what should I do? The doctor answered use the window!

Yet again, a lot of hard work put into this pro ect, a big thank you “ Well, it’s a good thing you switched cigarettes, Bob… You only have cancer light ”

for our writers. Till next year...
