Public heath. Public health was developed by the Romans as they believed that cleanliness would lead to good health. The Romans made links between causes of disease. As a consequence of this they developed a system of public health round their empire. The Romans believed that to stop an illness was more important the to cure the illness!. They observed the environment that people lived in to find out what was causing illnesses. This showed that there was a higher count of deaths round marshes and swamps. They advised people not to live round these areas. Such empirical observation that ill health could be associated with: • Bad air • Bad water • Swamps • Sewages • Lack of personal cleanliness. The Romans, resolved to provide clean water through aqueducts, to remove the bulk of sewage through the building of sewers and to develop a system of public toilets throughout their towns and city's. Personal hygiene was encouraged through the building of large public baths.
