PUBLIC HEALTH INSTITUTE FOR SPORTS MEDICINE IN MACEDONIA Public Health Institute for Sports Medicine was established in 1965 under Ministry of Health in Macedonia. In 1970, the Institute and many health centres were integrating into a comprehensive institutions of Skopje in compliance with the recommendation of the WHO. The Institute has major public health functions based on law, surveillance task, and also coordinates national network of 12 sports medicine, preventive centres on PHC level in Macedonia. Contributing to the health of the people, and in prevention of chronic disease, the Institute warks in close cooperation with National public health organization for health promotion through physical activity - HEPA Macedonia. This Institute carries out preventive, sport-medical examination of the preschool children, young people and active sportsmen, as well as those who take interest in sport and recreation, of different sex and age. Also, the Institute maintains register and compjuter database of 16.000 physically active people of total registered 60.000 in Macedonia.

SPORTS MEDICINE WORKS FOR BETTER PUBLIC HEALTH AND HIGH SPORTS PERFORMANCES

Sports medicine is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary medical specialization or subspecialization in 34 countries in EU which deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of illnesses or injuries resulting from recreational or professional participation to physical activities, exercises and sport. Also, sports medicine works for public health and medical care of all people who are physically active and exercise. To improve the general well-being, health and to prevent chronic disease of the population through promotion of an active lifestyle are main aspects of sports medicine future research and practice in Macedonia. In fact, sports medicine is a preventive as well as a clinical branch of medicine working for a specific physically active, exercising and sporting population to improve public health as well as sports performance.

CURRENT RESEARCH AND PRACTICE OF SPORTS MEDICINE IN MACEDONIA Public Health Institute for Sports Medicine influences the lives and improves the health of every physically active Macedonian citizen. The functions are: - Systematic, preventive medical examinations of the people physialy active in sport and recreation, evaluation of their health status, physical development, functional capacity of cardio-respiratory system and biochemical analysis - Sportsmen control during the training process - Control of physical activity influence on the young people in their development - Sports nutrition, dietho prevention and dieto therapy - Prevention of sportsmen injuries, measures for risk reduction of sport injuries and providing treatmnet and rehabilitation - Treatment of diseases with active movements (kinesi therapy) - Psychological investigation with psycho therapy - Work on the sport medicine doctrine, continuing doctoral education in health promotion and disease prevention through lifestyle changes, and also specialization of sports medicine at the Faculty of Medicine -Cathedre for human development and sport medicine at Faculty for Physical Culture, scientific research work. - Working in the sport organizations, clubs and differenet assotiations for sport pedagogues, coaches, MOC, FIMS, WHO, ECSS, on national and internat. levels
