PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC MEDICINES

Definition of Psychotherapeutic Medicine • A group of drugs for treating mentality illness. • Causes addiction. • Can be divided into 3 main groups; stimulants, antidepressants, antipsychotics.

STIMULANTS Substances that stimulate the reaction of the brain and central nervous system It can increase alertness too.

ADRENALIN E

Produced by the adrenal gland in our body. Natural stimulant Increases heart beat and helps the body to prepare for any emergency.

AMPHETAMIN E

COCAIN E

A strong and powerful synthetic stimulant Used as ‘pep pill’ to overcome fatigue. May help patient to lose weight as it increases the heart, respiration rates and blood pressure. May cause addiction. An alkaloid compound extracted from the leaves of coca tree. Used as a local anaesthetic agent. May cause addiction and mental or physical problems.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS Drugs used to reduce depression and increase the brain’s level of neurotransmitters. It can improve mood and make a person feel calm and sleepy. It used to treat psychotic disease, for example: panic, severe unnecessary worry, gloominess and stress.

BARBITURATE OR ‘SLEEPING PILL’ •A synthetic chemical substances in the form of capsules. •Slows down the body reaction and causes sleepiness. •Over dosage can cause TRANQUILIS death. ER Drugs that can reduce •Most barbiturates •are highly addictive. tension or anxiety. •Common tranquiliser: benzodiazepine. •These drugs are additive and can cause death.

ANTIPSYCHOTICS 1.Drugs are used to treat the symptoms of severe mental disorders (psychosis) 2.Psychotic patients may; Become angry easily. Hear voices and see things that are not really there (hallucinations). Are non-communicative. Have delusions and strong imagination. Think they are dirty.

Scizophrenia

Severe form of psychotic illness. They act abnormally and cannot think logically. They have extreme mood swings. Antipsychotic medicine do not cure mental illness, but reduce some of the symptoms. If the antipsychotic drugs are used for long term, it may cause serious movement disorders that resemble Parkinson’s disease and toxic to the heart, liver and bone marrow. Other example: haloperidol,
