Krishna K. Bista Dr. McNellis PSE 6691, CRITERIA FOR CRITIQUING A RESEACH PAPER P.298 Checklist Replies STEP 1 Yes. The research problem is clearly stated in the paper in relation to the previous research. But my paper does not cover a wide range of code switching cases since it’s very small and done with limited participants. STEP 2 Literature review along with its references is included. More or less, I think, it is logically organized. STEP 3 I believe the case of code switching factors in ESL/university class is a conceptual work. Relation of code switching concepts is adequately shown but they are not minutely defined and analyzed. STEP 4 Variables, in terms of age, numbers, TOEFL scores, frequencies and so on are operationally defined and statistically illustrated. STEP 5 The hypothesis is clear and testable. The conclusion gets its relation with the hypothesis. I had purposed that factors of code switching are non- academic rather than academic but it is proven just opposite of it i.e. factors of code switching are highly academic. STEP 6 Sample and size? I included 15 participants from ESL, undergraduate and graduate classes. I tried to include various nationals to show sample size adequate. I did not mention the criteria for selecting the sample clearly. I simply chose Chinese, Indian, Korean and Nepalese students, having total 15 from each 3 educational levels. Is that criteria of selection for this study? I’m not sure. STEP 7 I think it is. STEP 8 Yes, the data collection methods were appropriate for this study. Well, I got very good responses from ESL teachers lately. STEP 9 Yes, the result section is clearly organized, representing the data into table and figure. STEP 10 I think I missed this point. I simply wrote a section “Data Analysis and Interpretation” since my paper is really short and does not include a wide range of data like in big thesis paper. However, results are identified and conclusion is drawn as well.
